I could write my life's thesis on this Song. I never been in a black home when i was growing up and this Album wasn't present. "The All Time Greatest Album Ever Recorded" when i hear it it brings out every human emotion i have, Love, Hate, Joy, Pain, Sadness, Happiness. Its that Album that has encompassed every period of my life. I'm 60 as of Jan 2 2020 and i still cry when i hear Mercy Mercy Me. I love and miss my Brother Marvin, RIP.

Marvin and David Van DePitte, the arranger, clashed quite often during this production. At one point, Van DePitte, wanted to quit the session.

He went to Berry Gordy to complain, because Marvin was insistent on doing things his way. Gordy convinced Van DePitte to stay. Thank goodness they worked it out.

The two of them collaborated on something really beautiful that will last for quite some time. Both Marvin and Van DePitte won grammys for this album.

My all-time favorite album. Mother played it all the time when it came out back in 1971. The pain and raw emotion in the lyrics are incredible. And to think Berry Gordy didn't want him to record it because it was a socially conscious album. Album is prophetic!

Those days are gone, BUT I miss those days. I've only heard one last song in the last number of years that would be worth buying if I could still buy records and tapes. I would not pay for streaming a song because I'd just play it on YouTube for free, but records and tapes would be rare if I could buy a new song out new on record or tape because I'd have something tangible. My Dad told be about this song over 20yrs ago. He was a heroin addict( God rest his soul). It took him a long time to get clean. He said the pain of wanting it was always there. He was clean when he died. But he went through HELL.. This song is so deep people don't understand the sickness. I watched him try to be the best father he could. But that monkey had so much control. I pray who ever struggles with this gets help.

It is so sad that a lot of the greatest entertainers have demons in their private lives. We idolize them but they are humans also. When I think of Whitney, Michael, Elvis, Prince and many more, they pay heavy cost to be able to entertain us. I remember purchasing this album, only later to discover that my oldest son borrowed it over 20 years ago. Fortunately, I taped it on a cassette tape. This is the best of Marvin.

Heard this song when it came out in 1971. (Thanks to my parents r.i.p. playing it over and over.) I was 10. I still tear up when I hear this song. The whole album is the standard for concept albums.. I don't believe that there has been 6 months in a yeat that I don't come back to this album. Still relevant. Shame. 🥺
