Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.

Yeah Tammi?
Listen to me baby
Take a plane a million miles and stay 100 years
And come back baby, and I'll be waiting here
I'll be true to you, I ain't goin' nowhere
'Cause this love I have is just for you to share
Can't help but love you, can't help but love you, baby
I don't care to know how far I have to fly
I don't care to know how many stars are in the sky
There's just one thing, baby, that I've got to know
Will you love me forever, never let me go?
Oh Tammi!
Yeah Marvin?
Oh baby
I'll be lovin' you, I can't help myself
I'll be lovin' you and nobody else
I'll be lovin' you, oh yes I will
Till I'm old and gray
Till my heart stands still, oh Tammi!
Oh Marvin, tell me why do you love me?
I was just a rollin' stone goin' nowhere
Empty like a hollow room filled with despair
Then, like a rainbow and a pot of gold
You came into my life and you saved my very soul
Can't help but love you, can't help but love you, baby
Can't help but love you
Tell me, why do you love me?
I was so alone like a leaf without a tree
When out of the darkness your love lifted me
And I'm so grateful, baby I'm so glad
'Cause your sweet sweet love is the best I've ever had
Can't help but love you, can't help but love you, baby
Can't help but love you,
I'll be lovin' you, I can't help myself
I'll be lovin' you and nobody else
I'll be lovin' you, oh yes I will
Till I'm old and gray
Till my heart stands still
The song "You Can't Hurry Love" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell is a classic example of a love song. The lyrics tell the story of two people who are deeply in love and willing to wait for each other to return no matter how long it takes. In the first verse, Tammi asks Marvin to take a plane and travel a million miles away, assuring him that she will be waiting for him when he returns. She promises to remain true to him and to share her love with him. The chorus of the song emphasizes how she can't help but love him.
In the second verse, Marvin responds to Tammi's declarations of love by describing how he was a rolling stone before he met her, and how her love saved him from a life of emptiness and despair. He, too, emphasizes his inability to help himself from loving her. The song continues with the two singers expressing their love for each other, until the final chorus where Marvin states that he will love Tammi until he is old and gray and his heart stands still.
In conclusion, "You Can't Hurry Love" is a beautiful love song that expresses the deep connection and devotion between two people. The lyrics emphasize the power of love to transform people's lives and the willingness to wait for true love no matter how long it takes.

Lyrics
[Intro]
Girl, you've been gone away a real long time
Oh, I nearly went out of my mind
Waiting on you
Oh, I miss your loving
When you left me, baby, you did it
[Verse 1]
Ah baby, come here, let me caress you
Ah, ow! Baby, your letters, ow, told me what you missed
Come here, sugar, and get to this
Ah baby, I want you here
I want to do something freaky to you
I want to feel what I've felt a long time ago
Ah come, baby, and get to this
[Verse 2]
Ooh, remember, baby, how you made me feel just like a king?
Ah, I can’t wait, baby
I'm ready for you to start doing the things
I’m trying to blow your mind
You're so fine, so petite, oh, candy sweet
Ah, I can’t wait
Come here, come here, baby, get to this, ooh
[Verse 3]
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Sweet love, sweet love, oh
So good to have you back
Everything else will have to, to get back
Oh, nothing's changed, you're still sweet as morning rain
And I'm standing, ready to
Love you, baby, make it good to you
[Bridge]
Oh, I need your love
Don't make me wait, I can't wait
Oh, I'm so impatient for your love
Come here, sweet, sweet baby, and get to this, ooh
[Outro]
Girl, I know you've been gone a real long time
You nearly blew my mind, baby
Girl, you've been gone for so long
I'm so glad, babe, so glad that you’re home, oh baby
