Do Re Mi
Mary Martin Ensemble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Let's start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read you begin with (A-B-C)
When you sing you begin with Do-Re-Mi

(Do-re-mi) Do-Re-Mi
The first three notes just happen to be
Do-re-mi (Do-Re-Mi)
Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti
Come, I'll make it easier for you, listen

Do, a deer, a female deer
Re, a drop of golden sun
Mi, a name I call myself
Fa, a long, long way to run
So, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow so
Ti, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do oh-oh-oh

(Do) a deer, a female deer
(Re) a drop of golden sun
(Mi) a name I call myself
(Fa) a long, long way to run
So a needle pulling thread
La a note to follow so
Ti a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to

Do, a deer, a female deer
Re, a drop of golden sun
Mi, a name I call myself
Fa, a long, long way to run
So, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow so
Ti, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do

Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do

So Do

Now children, once you have these notes in your head
You can sing a million different tunes by mixing them up
Like this
So Do La Fa Mi Do Re
Now you do it
(So Do La Fa Mi Do Re)
So Do La Ti Do Re Do
(So Do La Ti Do Re Do)

Now, let's put it all together
So Do La Fa Mi Do Re
So Do La Ti Do Re Do

(But it doesn't mean anything)
So? We put in words
One word for every note

When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything

Together
When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything

Do, a deer, a female deer
Re, a drop of golden sun
Mi, a name I call myself
Fa, a long, long way to run
So, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow so
Ti, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do

Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do
Do Ti La So Fa Mi Re
Do Mi Mi
Mi So So
Re Fa Fa
La Ti Ti
Do Mi Mi Mi
So So Re
Fa Fa Ti Ti

When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything
Do, a deer, a female deer
Re, a drop of golden sun
Mi, a name I call myself
Fa, a long, long way to run
So, a needle pulling thread (a needle pulling thread)
La, a note to follow so (a note to follow so)
Ti, a drink with jam and bread (jam and bread)
That will bring us back to do
That will bring us back to

Do Ti La So Fa Mi Re Do

(Do)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Do Re Mi" by the Mary Martin Ensemble from the musical "The Sound of Music" are a playful and educational exploration of the solfĂšge scale and the joy of music. The opening lines emphasize the importance of starting at the very beginning, alluding to the basic building blocks of reading and singing, such as the alphabet and the solfĂšge syllables.

The song then dives into the solfĂšge scale, with each note being explained through creative and memorable associations. For example, "Do" is likened to a deer, "Re" to a golden sun, and so on. These vivid and whimsical descriptions not only make learning the notes more fun but also help cement them in the listeners' minds.

The repetition of the solfĂšge scale in various combinations and arrangements highlights the versatility and creative potential of these simple musical elements. By mixing up the notes and creating different sequences, the song demonstrates how a few basic elements can be combined in infinite ways to create unique melodies.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics emphasize the power of words and the connection between language and music. By assigning a word to each note, the song underscores the idea that music and language are intertwined and that knowing the notes allows one to express a wide range of emotions and stories through song.

In the final verses, the lyrics encourage the listeners to sing along and experiment with the solfĂšge scale, further reinforcing the idea that music is a universal language that can be enjoyed and shared by all. The song concludes with a triumphant affirmation that knowing the notes to sing opens up a world of possibilities for musical expression.

Martin nails that low C at the end 😂. Way stronger than in the studio!

@matOpera

Amazing this exists! Thank you for posting. I think Martin was vocally leaps and bounds beyond Julie Andrews in this role. A strong chest voice adds so much color, expressivity, and interest.

@kaji2883

I have the whole show!

@matOpera

@@kaji2883Wow, I can’t believe there is a complete recording!

Could I request you post “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and the nuns’ choral preludium at some point?

Those are definitely two of my favorite pieces Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote. (“Climb Ev’ry Mountain” is almost certainly my #1.)

@mmjhcb

I saw this in person, my first Broadway show. I loved Mary Martin and still do. I saved Christmas and birthday money to pay for orchestra tickets for my mother and me. It is impossible to convey the talent, the charm, the electricity of Mary Martin and how she loved what she was doing and everyone who came to see her. BTW, she died 31 years ago today. A truly great loss. She is irreplaceable.

@stephencowley3661

How fortunate you are, would have love to have seen her in the Sound of Music as Maria unfortunately too young ,born too late as they say. It is a thing you will never forget though memories for ever.

@mmjhcb

@@stephencowley3661 Thank you, Stephen. You're so right. Those memories are forever! Years later, I saw Mary Martin in "Legends" with Carol Channing. I was determined to finally meet her.I'd had a couple of treasured replies to my letters, but had never met her. I waited for her to arrive before the show and got my wish. She was just as she appeared to be in notes, or on stage or TV: humble, grateful, and genuine! I tell you I sobbed when she died. Not many "stars" have that effect on their fans. She was a legend for a reason. Thank you again.

@stephencowley3661

I bet you did ,The Day I heard of her death a copy of her autobiography was for sale in my local library which seems so strange to me, but how wonderful you actually met me I'm so glad she was exactly the person she appeared to be, Had I met her I would have wanted to talk to her for hours as Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical partner is my evocation I actually wrote a critique of their work to Richard Rodgers daughter Mary , who I know Mary knew well and received a personal reply. Her like with never be seen again.@@mmjhcb

@javimu111

This is Incredible. I had no idea this existed.

@AdamsBrew78

Wish we had recordings of the real life family singers the story is based on.
