The Dock of the Bay
Matt Rogers Lyrics

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin' is gonna come my way

Now I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooh, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing is gonna change
Everything still remains the same
And I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

I'm sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Overall Meaning

In Otis Redding's posthumously released hit "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay," he presents a poignant image of a man sitting on the dock of the bay, contemplating the arc of his life. The song is an introspective narrative of a man who has hit rock bottom and sees no way out of his predicament. He is tired of steadily moving toward an unknown future while the physical scenery around him remains the same. But ironically, the monotony of the scene provides a sense of transience and makes him wish for some stability in his life. He is trying to come to terms with the fact that his current situation is his own choosing, a product of his past mistakes, and it's not likely to change. The lyric "I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay, wastin' time" reveals the character's realization that his life has lost some value, and he misses the sense of direction he once had.

Otis Redding was inspired to write "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" when he was reflecting on the changes in his life at the time. The song is about leaving behind what one knows to be true in search of something new. The image of a man sitting on the dock of the bay watching the tide roll away is a metaphor for the uncertainties, challenges, and temporary moments of life. The lyrics are sad but tempered with a sense of quiet acceptance, conveying a sense of serenity that comes from giving up and placing oneself in God's hands. Overall, it's a powerful song about hope, acceptance, and the beauty of transient moments that pass us by.

Thanks for the upload. I thought they did a great job with this song. Paul Rodgers very dynamic, yet respectful of the original recording here. He has an uncanny ability to sing with his "head voice" and then kick in the diaphragm full force in a very smooth transition with no loss of control. Great balance of technique and feel. He puts his heart and soul into his singing. My favorite singer of all time.

Michael Jones

It's like he makes it his own without making it about him (if that makes sense to anyone else)

How in the hell is this guy not in the R+R Hall of Fame? Certainly one of the greatest rock singers in the last 50 years. Shameful!

Dennis

There has NEVER been a more pitch-perfect singer since Paul Rodgers came on the scene in 1968 FACT......

Ed9870

One of the finest moments of a great evening, and a direction that Paul would revisit on Muddy Water Blues and the Royal Sessions. Simply one of the greatest. And a rock and rock hall of famer even without a hall of fame.

Gene Ferguson

Paul Rodgers is an incredible vocalist. Here he is smooth as silk. But he can sing rough as well. To me he's the best.
