We're So Heavy
Matthew Good Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Close your eyes, live at noon
We don't know what we are
But we're tired of it
Go and get your friends
We'll take this city while it's sleeping
Down and out without a doubt
We're down and out
Can't get out from under it
There's too many of us that don't want to fight it
Hey I've lost too many years to this
I walk behind the crowd
And pick up the garbage that was our future without memory
That made the children of the system we created
And then forgave
How can you love Jove Drusilla and forsake Rome?
The lyrics of Matthew Good's song We're So Heavy capture a sense of disillusionment and frustration with the state of the world. The lines "Go shoot down the sun and moon, close your eyes, live at noon" suggest a desire to escape from reality, to shut out the light and live in a dreamlike state. This is followed by a statement of uncertainty about the nature of humanity and our place in the world: "We don't know what we are, but we're tired of it."
The lyrics then take a more political turn, with the call to action to "go and get your friends, we'll take this city while it's sleeping." There is a sense that the system is broken, and that change can only come through collective action. The lines "We're down and out, we're so heavy, can't get out from under it" suggest a feeling of being weighed down by the problems of the world, but also a determination to keep fighting. The final lines of the song, "How can you love Jove Drusilla and forsake Rome?" are a reference to the TV series Rome and suggest a sense of betrayal and disillusionment with the systems and institutions that govern our lives.
Overall, the lyrics of We're So Heavy capture a sense of frustration and alienation, but also a sense of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
