Sunday Morning
Matthew Sweet; Susanna Hoffs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunday morning, praise the dawning
It's just a restless feeling by my side
Early dawning, Sunday morning
It's just the wasted years so close behind

Watch out, the world's behind you
There's always someone around you who will call
It's nothing at all

Sunday morning and I'm falling
I've got a feeling I don't want to know
Early dawning, Sunday morning
It's all the streets you crossed, not so long ago

Watch out, the world's behind you
There's always someone around you who will call
It's nothing at all

Watch out, the world's behind you
There's always someone around you who will call
It's nothing at all

Overall Meaning

The song "Sunday Morning" by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs is a contemplative and reflective piece that touches on the struggle of moving on from the past and the sometimes overwhelming nature of the present. The opening lines, "Sunday morning, praise the dawning, it's just a restless feeling by my side" sets the tone for the song as one that is saturated with a feeling of unrest and unease. The reference to Sunday morning adds an interesting layer to the song as it is often associated with rest and relaxation, yet the lyrics speak to an opposite sense of anxiety and uncertainty.

The chorus of the song, "Watch out, the world's behind you, there's always someone around you who will call, it's nothing at all," speaks of the ever-present nature of the world around us and the weight that it can bring to our lives. The line "it's nothing at all" is a reminder that despite this weight, life will go on and the world will continue to turn. The song also touches on the idea of regrets and missed opportunities as the line, "it's all the streets you crossed, not so long ago" speaks to this theme.

Overall, "Sunday Morning" is a poignant and introspective piece that speaks to the universal human experience of grappling with the uncertainties of life and the weight of the past.

This woman's voice is like a recreational drug for the ears.

Gorgeous version of a track I've always loved.

Reminds me of many years ago. My wife and daughter would be asleep on Sunday morning. I'd get up early, go to to the local bakery, get crossoints for them and make breakfast.

Finally found this song! This played at my work a whole lot, but I never got the chance to look it up because I was always busy with something else. It's been too long without knowing who sung this gem!

This is so beautiful. One of my favorite songs, played by one of my favorite musicians, and I'm really going to look into Susanna Hoffs a bit more, she has a great voice, and is more than just a cute pair of eyes, apparently :)

Great Lyrics to listen to and really think about every day, not just Sunday!
