Walkin'
Matthew and the Birds Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Bury me where the concrete meets the sky
I want all the pretty girls to see right where I lie
And dip their fingers in the wet cement
And write keep walkin' pal right where I used to sit
And I ain't trying to be remembered
In a shitty club where I'm the last damn member
I blacked out 17 of my best years
Every one of us is like the stars this city drowns
Bright and distant, and dead before we even hit the ground
And baby I'm an astronaut
And you're my enterprise
Gonna see what I can do
Once I get inside
Girl, I'm gonna warp you on this ride
In the song "Walkin' Pal" by Matthew and the Birds, the lyrics convey a reflective and somewhat melancholic perspective on life. The opening lyrics "Bury me where the concrete meets the sky, I want all the pretty girls to see right where I lie" symbolize a desire for recognition and a yearning to leave a lasting impression. The reference to the "wet cement" suggests a desire to be remembered even after death, as if leaving a physical mark for others to see.
The following lines "And I ain't trying to be remembered, I'm just trying to stay high while I'm here" signify a contrast in the singer's intentions. While they express a desire to be noticed, they also acknowledge that they are merely seeking personal fulfillment and happiness in the present. The reference to being in a "shitty club" where they feel like the last member suggests a sense of isolation or detachment from their surroundings. The mention of "blacking out 17 of my best years" implies a period of time in their life that they have lost or forgotten, emphasizing a sense of regret or wasted time.
The lyrics "Every one of us is like the stars this city drowns, bright and distant, and dead before we even hit the ground" paint a bleak picture of existence. This line suggests that individuals are easily overlooked in a bustling city, with their dreams and aspirations often going unnoticed. The comparison to stars implies a sense of beauty and potential that is fading away, lost without having a chance to truly shine.
The metaphor of the singer being an astronaut and the person they address as their "enterprise" illustrates their ambitious and exploratory nature in their relationship. The line "Gonna see what I can do once I get inside" suggests a desire to delve deeper into the relationship and discover new experiences together, symbolizing a metaphorical journey or adventure.
Overall, "Walkin' Pal" by Matthew and the Birds is a reflective song that explores themes of seeking recognition, the fleeting nature of life, isolation, and the yearning for meaningful connections. The lyrics offer a mixture of introspection, regret, and a longing for both personal fulfillment and a deeper connection with others.
Line by Line Meaning
Bury me where the concrete meets the sky
Lay me to rest in a place that symbolizes endless possibilities
I want all the pretty girls to see right where I lie
I desire attention and admiration, even in death
And dip their fingers in the wet cement
I want them to leave a physical mark of their presence in my life
And write keep walkin' pal right where I used to sit
They should be reminded to keep moving forward, as I did
And I ain't trying to be remembered
My goal isn't to leave a lasting legacy
I'm just trying to stay high while I'm here
I want to experience moments of euphoria and escape from reality
In a shitty club where I'm the last damn member
Existing in a place of loneliness and despair, where I'm the only one left
I blacked out 17 of my best years
I've wasted a significant portion of my life in a state of oblivion
Every one of us is like the stars this city drowns
We are all unique individuals overshadowed by the chaos of this city
Bright and distant, and dead before we even hit the ground
Our potential and dreams are often extinguished before we can fully realize them
And baby I'm an astronaut
I see myself as an adventurer exploring uncharted territories
And you're my enterprise
You are the vessel that supports and empowers me
Gonna see what I can do
I'm determined to discover my capabilities
Once I get inside
Once I embrace and fully engage in this journey with you
Girl, I'm gonna warp you on this ride
I will take you on a thrilling and transformative adventure

LYRICS
Caught a glimpse and I realized
I been so nearsighted
So much that I can’t see
Stuck here in a daydream
Watching everything pass me by
I need a bigger point of view
Some clarity is overdue
Cause some things I just can’t see through
I’m falling off the edge of nowhere
I just wanna go where
I can see the world so clear
Tell me everything I’m missing
I don’t wanna miss it
Show me what you see up here
Oh oh, cause I’ve been deep over my head
You give me peace when I’m
Falling off the edge of nowhere
I just wanna go where
I can see the world like you
Bird’s eye view
Like I’m lost in a hailstorm
I forget what I’m fighting for
Blurry turned to blindness
Now I’m realizing
Up there you can see so much more
I need a bigger point of view
Some clarity is overdue
So show me where to rendezvous
I’m falling off the edge of nowhere
I just wanna go where
I can see the world so clear
Tell me everything I’m missing
I don’t wanna miss it
Show me what you see up here
Oh oh, cause I’ve been deep over my head
You give me peace when I’m
Falling off the edge of nowhere
I just wanna go where
I can see the world like you
Bird’s eye view
Bird’s eye view
So change my direction
A whole new perspective
Till my frame of reference is you
I’m falling off the edge of nowhere
I just wanna go where
I can see the world so clear
Tell me everything I’m missing
I don’t wanna miss it
Show me what you see up here
Oh oh, cause I’ve been deep over my head
You give me peace when I’m
Falling off the edge of nowhere
I just wanna go where
I can see the world like you
Bird’s eye view
Falling off the edge of nowhere
I just wanna go where
I can see the world like you
Bird’s eye view

"Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you knew everything? Well, God does. Our new song "Bird's Eye View" is about asking God to give us a perspective that is much closer to what he sees--the proverbial "bigger picture". When you're standing with your feet on the earth, you have a limited view of what's ahead of you, but if you can get a "bird's eye view", you can see what's ahead and have a much deeper, wiser perspective. As the lyrics say, "I just want to see the world like you, [with your] bird's eye view" - Matthew Parker
