Slipping Away
Max Merritt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, I've been watching you
Watching everything you do
And I just can't help feeling
Someone else is stealing
You away from me

I see it written in your eyes
And you confirm it with your lies
Though the whip you weave can hold me
I would rather that you told me
Where you want to be

Ooh! slipping away from me
Ooh! slipping away from me

And it's breaking me in two
Watching you slipping away

Overall Meaning

The song 'Slipping Away' by Max Merritt is a heartbreaking account of watching someone you love slowly slip away from you. The opening lines of the song show the singer has been closely observing their loved one and is aware that something is not right. They see the signs in their eyes and they lie about it. The loved one is slowly being taken away and the singer feels helpless because they can't do anything about it. The phrase "someone else is stealing you away from me" indicates that the singer may suspect infidelity or betrayal.

Despite this suspicion, the singer is not ready to give up the relationship. They want their loved one to tell them honestly where they want to be, indicating that they are willing to make an effort to keep the relationship going. The repetition of the lines "slipping away from me" shows the desperation and pain the singer feels at the thought of losing their loved one.

The song is a poignant and relatable reminder of the pain of losing someone you love. It is a powerful message of how communication and honesty are vital in a relationship, and how, despite our best efforts, sometimes things slip away from us. The raw emotion conveyed in the song is sure to resonate with anyone who has experienced such heartbreak.

Nosso legado!!!

A Jeová toda glória, nossa história e gratidão

It was a Friday night in August 1987 in an Auckland yacht club (PCC) after an evening Rum Race. A young lass picked up a guitar and started strumming the intro and then started to sing this song. The rowdy bar was immediately silenced and the crowd joined in. After the first chorus, she put down the guitar and the crowd continued to sing 'a capella' in perfect harmony until the end of the song. Everyone there knew all the words, even the key change. It was one of the most moving musical experiences of my life and I will never, ever forget it. Almost a religious experience. RIP Max and Stewey. Thanks for the song and the memories.

Reminds me of my summers at our local pool with this song blasting out of the speakers. To be a teenager again in the 70’s

What a classic and beautiful song. Today's music is just crap compared to timeless music like this.

Max Merritt and the Meteors, fantastic talent. Saw them in concert in the 70's, magical moment, best concert ever! Love Max.
