Round Midnight
Mel Torme Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell,
Round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well, till after sundown,
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad;
But it really gets bad,
Round midnight.
Memories always start round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories,
When my heart is still with you,
And ol' midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending.
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart,
And I'm out of my mind.
Let our hearts take wings
Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing,
For your returning.
Till our love is safe and sound.
And old midnight comes around.
Feelin' sad,

Really gets bad
Round, round, round, mid, night

Overall Meaning

Mel Torme's song, Round Midnight, explores the complex emotions of heartbreak, longing, and regret. The opening lines set the scene for the song's melancholic tone, "It begins to tell, 'round midnight, midnight." The singer reveals that they do "pretty well" until after sundown, but that supper time marks the beginning of feeling low. However, the real sadness sets in "round midnight" when memories of a lost love start to overwhelm the singer. The line "Memories always start round midnight" is particularly poignant. The singer is unable to escape their heartbreak, even when everyone else is sleeping soundly. The final lines of the song suggest that the singer hopes their love will return, "Let the angels sing, For your returning. Till our love is safe and sound." The repetition of the word "round" creates a sense of cyclical nature to these emotions. The singer continues to feel sadness and heartbreak every night, as the clock strikes midnight.

The song's lyrics tap into the human experience of heartbreak and the difficulties in moving on. The metaphor of midnight symbolizes the dark and lonely feelings associated with heartbreak, but the song also offers a sense of hopefulness that the singer's love might return. The repetition of "round midnight" emphasizes that these emotions are cyclical and suggests that the singer is stuck in a never-ending loop of heartbreak and longing.

Picture this...a smoke-filled caberet, a couple of cocktails, your newlywed spouse, and dreaming together the life you two are gonna share. Well, this was my life 50 years ago when my new wife and I honeymooned in NYC and went to see Mel Torme at the Stork Club's smaller lounge, where headliners of the day performed. This was one of the songs he sang and this just brought some sweet memories! Sadly, my beautiful bride passed on a few months ago, but, I know she is here now, listening too.
