Fiona was featured on Reggae Gold 2008 with the Supa Dups-produced "Somebody Come Get Me". Her debut album The Bridge was released in the summer of 2009. She worked on the album with Future Cut, Vada Nobles, Stereotypes, J. Phoenix, Peter Wade and Salaam Remi. The debut single "Give It to Me Right" was released to radio stations on February 28, 2009, and peaked at #20 on Billboard's Canadian Hot 100 and #41 on the UK Singles Chart. The second single, "It Kills Me", became her breakout song on the Billboard Hot 100 where it cracked the Top 50, along with hitting #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song earned Fiona a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Her second album, The MF Life, was released through the SRC Records and Universal Republic on March 20, 2012 after several delays. The Break Down The Walls Songfacts reports Fiona told Billboard magazine that her goal with The MF Life was to give an "honest" depiction of her life and how things have changed from her debut set, The Bridge.
In 2002, Fiona was briefly involved with girl group X-Quisite. Early in her career, she would perform at nightclubs in Toronto. In 2005, Fiona traveled to Los Angeles, California, in search of a recording contract. According to Fiona, record labels "loved" the way she looked and sung, but "knew that the minute I worked with them or would have signed with them, they would have tried to change me into someone else completely different. That was something that I didn't want to do." She went on to co-write songs for recording artists Rihanna and Kardinal Offishall. Fiona also recorded the reggae song "Somebody Come Get Me" under the stage name Syren Hall, which was included in the Reggae Gold 2008 compilation album. Entrepreneur Steve Rifkind discovered and signed Fiona to SRC Records and Universal Motown in 2007. She went on to tour with Kanye West in his Glow in the Dark Tour.
Can't Say I Never Loved You

Who in the world can I give it to
Who can I live my life to change the world with
Oh yeah
If I love what you tell me
'Cause I can't take responsibilities
My pride is all I have now you're gonna take it take it take it from me
Promises were all I got, it might mean nothing to you
You said you love me but you left
Lord knows I really did my best
I relied on you to do the rest
Can't say I never loved you
And I was giving you me
Hoping that the possibility
Wouldn't need to set you free
Can't say I never loved you
Where you going I hope you're staying
There's no way you can't repay what you took from me
Baby, no way
I'm not crying over you
Not gonna chase you down like some fool
If this is it baby have it your way
Promises were all I got, it might mean nothing to you
But to me it meant a lot
You said you love me but you left
Lord knows I really did my best
I relied on you to do the rest
Can't say I never loved you
And I was giving you me
Hoping that the possibility
Wouldn't need to set you free
Can't say I never loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
Was it everything that you planned it to
Believe it, really I'm gonna get over you
And now the change is all from red to blue
You're like old news old news old news
You said you love me but you left
Lord knows I really did my best
I relied on you to do the rest
Can't say I never loved you
And I was giving you me
Hoping that the possibility
Wouldn't need to set you free
Can't say I never loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
Can't say that I never loved you
Loved you loved you
The lyrics in Melanie Fiona's "Can't Say I Never Loved You" is a reflection of a broken relationship. The first verse of the song shows that the singer is still in love with the other person and wondering who else they can give their love to if they can't be with that person. The singer also acknowledges that they can't take responsibility for everything in the relationship and that their pride is all they have left. The chorus shows that the singer still loves the other person and did everything in their power to keep the relationship intact. Despite the difficulties, the singer hopes that they wouldn't have to set the other person free. However, by the end of the song, the singer seems to have accepted the breakup and is moving on.
