Underground
Memphis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's time to lose the day
It's time to head to Beale
Where the rhythm is hot
And the music is real

You can do without love
Swear off the booze
But everyone alive
Needs to sing the blues
So time to raise some hell
And get on down

We goin' down, down
Underground
We goin' down, down, down
Just to hear that sound

We're gonna dance so close
Feel my breath on your skin
It ain't quite heaven
But the closest I been
We goin' down, down
Underground

First we heard it in church
Then we added some gin
Then we took it down here
And added soul to sin

We gonna jump and jive
Like a demon possessed
The devil's in the music
The music is blessed
We goin' down
Where paradise is found

We goin' down, down
Underground
We goin' down, down, down
Just to burn that sound

We gonna do some things
That you never dared
Ain't no white folks here
'Cause they too damn scared
We goin' down, down
Underground

My brother runs my life
My brother owns this bar
He won't let me be
Till he makes me a star

He gives me this mic
Makes me sing all I can
Just can't have no fun
Or talk to no man
Wanna paint the town
But with him, ain't no fooling around

We goin' down, down
Underground
We goin' down, down, down
Just to hear that sound

Gonna grope and grind
Hold on tight
Find true love
At least for tonight
We goin' down, down
Underground

It's a revolution of the heart and soul
It's here to stay, ain't never gonna go
It's a rebel cry that's outta control
It's the birth of rock and roll
Rock'n'roll, rock'n'roll, rock'n'roll

We goin' down, down
Underground
We goin' down, down, down
Gonna rock the sound

We're gonna dance and drink
Till the whiskey's all gone
And pray that the preacher
Forgives us at dawn
We goin' down, down
Underground

We goin' underground
(We goin' underground)
We goin' underground

(We goin' underground)
We goin' underground

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Memphis's song "Underground" are about the joys of heading to the famous Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, where the music is real and the rhythm is hot. The song acknowledges that everyone needs to sing the blues in their life, even if they don't necessarily understand or seek love or drink. The song encourages listeners to raise some hell and to go down underground to hear that sound. It describes the feeling of dancing close to someone else and feeling their breath on your skin, which may not be heaven, but it's the closest the singer has been.

The verses of the song describe the journey of music from sacred to secular after gin is added, and how this music becomes soulful and blessed even as it's devilish. There's a sense that the underground music scene and the mix of races that it attracts have something special that white folks are too scared to come and experience fully. The end of the song is a call to revolution, a rebellion of the heart and soul, with rock and roll as the birth of this radical energy. Overall, the song celebrates the joy of letting loose, dancing, singing the blues, and finding community in the underground music scene.

When this came out I was in Vietnam flying helicopters for the US Army. Whenever we got a break from the war we gathered to get cooled off & put this album on to play. It's still my favorite song from those bitter-sweet memories, when we thanked God we had made it back one more time and saluted those of us who hadn't.

I love me some FLUTE. I love how each musician have their solo part & how they keep the same melody in the background. Music back then was saying something, that kept us GROOVING for as long as we wanted to. This instrumental talks to your inner musical groove so pleasantly. RIP Herbie Mann, thank you for leaving us such a profound legacy.....

Jeffry Hammel

Oops! Larry Couriel. Excuse the spelling.

Hey, thanks. You said everything I wanted to say. Btw, is that Larry Carlton on guitar? Just wondering. I've seen him so many times since the 70's.

Richard Goffin-Lecar

This is one of those tracks that just make you want to get an instrument out and play along yourself. Mann's music is seldom particularly complex, (not to say that he could not be, when he wanted to), but it is easy to listen to, often VERY catchy, ant it MAKES LIFE BETTER!  Enough said!

Ken Kovar

yes he knew how to be funky and very soulful... and a real talent for picking sidemen, that guitar was outta sight
