Messiah
Messiah - And the Glory of the Lord Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We speak for him, our voice is his,
We come to you now.
Took the darkest turn,
Heal before his return, return.

All we know,
One day gone,
As we go,
This lives on.

You let yourself be taken,
Time for you to question.
All you want is fun,
Can’t you see your brain is dumb?
I’m numb.

All we know,
One day gone,
As we go,
This lives on.

All your thoughts will cross,
Pray for the pariah,
Messiah, Messiah, Messiah, Messiah!

Messiah,
Messiah,
Messiah,

All we know,
One day gone,

As we go,
This lives on.

Overall Meaning

In "Messiah - And the Glory of the Lord's Song Messiah," the lyrics convey a sense of calling and purpose. The singers identify themselves as representing the Messiah, speaking on his behalf and delivering a message to the listeners. They claim to come to the audience in the present moment, urging them to take notice and pay attention.

The lyrics take a reflective turn when they mention a "darkest turn" that the Messiah had to endure. This turn could refer to a challenging or difficult period in his life or mission. However, after this darkness, there is a call to heal and prepare for his return.

The repetition of the phrase "All we know, One day gone, As we go, This lives on" suggests the transient nature of life and how the impact of the Messiah's presence endures beyond the passing of time. It emphasizes the timeless and lasting significance of his message.

The following lines express a frustration with those who prioritize pleasure and shallow pursuits over deeper contemplation and understanding. The lyrics challenge the listeners to question their own desires, suggesting that indulging in trivial matters blinds them to the true potential of their minds.

As the song progresses, there is a call for prayer for the pariah, using the term "pariah" to identify the outcast or marginalized. The repetition of the word "Messiah" emphasizes the centrality and importance of this figure, reinforcing the message of his enduring legacy.

Ultimately, the lyrics remind us that everything we know and possess will eventually pass away, but the impact we create while we are here will continue to exist even after we are gone.

So magnificent! Glorious! Such genius of performance, and Handel too, of course. Thanks be to God.

I did this one, at the same time I did Worthy is the lamb, in 1986. I love it. Nobody at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford Surrey, could believe it, when I said that I did them both when I was just 16 years old, with my senior school choir!

Slightly different from how I've usually sung it. This is set at a faster tempo, and in the 4 or 5 measures where the sopranos sing the final "for the mouth of the Lord...", the sopranos would sing "mouth" for one beat, then instead of singing each word on A for the entire measure "MOUTH-- OF-- THE-- LORD-- --", we would mirror the tenors but in our octave, then finish as it's shown here, final quarter note of "Lord" on C, then to the "Hath spoken it", as written. We had a strong enough alto section to carry the sustained A on the 'Mouth of the Lord", so it sounded balanced, and a little brighter with the addition of the "treble" sopranos carrying along with the "melody" tenors, and the basses in harmony. It worked for our choir and with the arrangement we had, anyway...

The Holy Spirit used Handel to compose these songs to the Glory of the Lord!

I totally agree. I wish people who sing this movements would not see this as just a performance but sing to His glory. Not for the praise of man.

Roslyn Williams

Indeed He did!
