Allie was raised on American folk and grew up playing other peoples' music on her piano. Adulthood brought a desire to learn guitar and also a fascination with synthetic sounds and dreamy, trip-hop vocals that she was eager to incorporate into her own compositions. Learning to play guitar led her to begin writing her own songs.
Greg Doscher was previously a guitarist in Tripdavon with which he recorded and co-produced 3 albums touring in Asia, Europe and North America with their debut album reaching number 12 on the UK charts. On break from this project, he had been eager to work with a broader range of sounds and Allie’s unique voice proved to be an effective counterpoint to the blend of electronic and organic sounds in his productions.
Their first single, Fade, was released in the summer of 2014. As a totally unknown act with no label and no marketing push it managed through sheer word of mouth to reach number 1 on Hype Machine’s most popular chart twice over the course of the next few months and became one of the biggest indie breakout hits of the year. Encouraged by the overwhelming response to “Fade”, Allie and Greg formed a live band to tour and continued to write and record new material. Subsequent singles “Colors”, “Shot the Moon” and “Watery Dreams” were all well received and continued to build on what their debut single had started while expanding the boundaries of their sound. Their self-titled debut EP was released on September 15, 2015.
Off The Hook
Mexico City Blondes Lyrics

weary of the things that make me up
Turning on the tables that i’ve been waiting
turning on a light in a dark room
I want to let you let you off the hook
Count up the chances the chances that I took
Just to win just to prove I could
I took I took a chance on you
Just to win just to prove I could
It’s getting kinda late for looking backwards
maybe I can find my own way down
I can speculate but there are no answers
What i’m looking for just can’t be found
I want to let you let you off the hook
Count up the chances the chances that I took
I took I took a chance on you
Just to win just to prove I could
I took I took a chance on you
Just to win just to prove I could
Where’s the heat the heat to melt the heart
In the tea leaves it comes apart
Where’s the heat the heat to melt the heart
In the tea leaves it comes apart
it comes apart
it comes apart
I took I took a chance on you
Just to win just to prove I could
I took I took a chance on you
Just to win just to prove I could
The lyrics to Mexico City Blondes's song "Off the Hook" express the singer's weariness with the path they have been taking lately and their desire to turn things around. They are tired of the things that make them up and are ready to let go of the past. They want to let someone off the hook, perhaps implying that they have been holding onto anger or resentment towards someone for too long. The singer reflects on the chances they took, possibly in their personal life or in a relationship, and wonders if it was all worth it.
The second verse continues this theme of reflection and looking for answers. The singer realizes that they can't keep looking back and must find their own way forward. They acknowledge that there may not be any answers to their questions and they must forge ahead despite this uncertainty. The final lines repeat the idea of taking a chance to prove oneself and ask where the passion is to melt someone's heart - possibly implying that they have been playing it safe in their personal life and want to take more risks.
Overall, "Off the Hook" is a introspective and reflective song that touches on themes of regret, taking chances, and the uncertainty of the future.
