You're My Everything
Michael Feinstein Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're my everything underneath the sun
You're my everything rolled up into one
You're my only dream, my only real reality
You're my idea of a perfect personality
You're my everything, everything I need
You're the song I sing and the book I read
You're a way beyond belief and just to make it brief
You're my winter, summer, spring, my everything
You're my everything (everything I need)
You're the song I sing and the book I read

You're a way beyond belief and just to make it brief
You're my winter, summer, spring, my everything

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Michael Feinstein & George Shearing's song You're My Everything express a deep devotion and love for someone that encompasses all aspects of the singer's life. The phrase "You're my everything" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the all-encompassing nature of this love. The use of imagery such as "winter, summer, spring" further emphasizes that this love is constant and enduring regardless of any external circumstances.

The lyrics also express a sense of idealization of the loved one, describing them as the singer's "only dream" and "perfect personality." This suggests a certain level of illusion or fantasy, as it is unlikely that any real person could live up to such high expectations. However, the song seems to revel in this idealization, using it as a way to express the depth of the singer's feelings.

Overall, the lyrics to "You're My Everything" are a romantic celebration of a deep, all-consuming love that transcends ordinary reality and encompasses every aspect of the singer's life.

A tale often-told my kin.
One monday night in 1987, Mr. Feinstein was a guest on 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.'
I was not familiar with his name.
He was so engaging. He told about his family being neighbors with none other than Ira Gershwin and how he was asked by the lyricist to help organize his voluminous files and what-not, learning abundantly from him about the background to Broadway productions and dozens of songs that became classics through the years.
On that Monday night, he played perhaps two numbers at the piano, one of them being 'Someone to Watch Over Me.'
In reference to Mr. Gershwin's lyrical wit, it made an impression on me when he told Johnny and the audience how it was important to Mr. Gershwin that the rhyme to:
"Although I may not be the man some girls think of as handsome" should properly not be sung
"...the man
Some girls think of
as handsome..."
but, rather, that it be done to match:
"...mansome" with
"...handsome."
What impressed me about Mr. Feinstein's performing style was the straightforward, 1930s-like rendition of the songs (one by Irving Berlin, I seem to recall), so reminiscent of the 78 rpm recordings from the 1920s through late 1930s that my father was so fond of.
On Friday of that week, my cousin, a friend and I were in Los Angeles. We had the weekend off and one of us (not I, am rather less than adventurous) suggested that we spend the weekend in San Francisco.
We boarded a shuttle flight early that afternoon. On my seat, there happened to be a discarded S.F. newspaper of that day, folded from the inside. Having picked it up, a nightclub ad caught my eye: "Tonight" it said, "Michael Feinstein at the Plush Room."
Could not believe my luck!
I enthused about this young artist so much that I persuaded the others to attend the date.
But there was no mention of address or of telephone number. I assumed everybody in SF knew of the Plush Room.
We touched ground at about 6 pm. A shuttle bus drove us to town but traffic was not light. It must have been nearly 8 pm when we settled in at our hotel.
Unbelievably, tourist brochures and magazines in our room and in the lobby had no reference about the nightclub. The concierge was unable to help.
At about 8:15 I called information. The operator was not familiar with the Plush Room either, but asked me to hold while she asked around. I was concerned about the clock ticking and that the locale would be on the other side of town. After about a 90-second eternity, she gave me the phone number. So relieved was I that I neglected to ask for the address.
I dialed the phone number given to me and was told that the performance would begin at nine. I asked for the address and wrote it down for the cabbie to deal with. Rushed to tell the others that we might be able to make it in time.
That's when I realized the the name of the street sermed familiar.
It was the same street as that of our hotel! Rushed down to the lobby and learned that the address was right across from our hotel. The Plush Room was within the York Hotel (now closed).
It was perhaps 8:30. I told the others that I would rush on over to secure a good table for us and wait for them at 9 pm.
I believe I jay-walked over across the street. Was the first patron there and sat at a table right across from the piano.
It was one of the most unforgettable musical experiences ever, the breadth of stage originals and the background to each piece, something comparable in my experience to a 2-hour impeccable performance by 'The Swingle Singers' in 1972; or watching 'The King and I' with Yul Brynner on Broadway in 1977, or 'A Chorus Line' also on Broadway, 3 times in the 1980s.
As the show ended, I told the others that I would ask to go backstage and compliment Mr. Feinstein. He allowed me to speak with him. Did not want to impose but had to tell him about my dad's high regard to the Rodgers/Hart repertoire, etc. And very gracious he was.
In the hotel lobby, we each purchased his '...at the Algonquin' and 'Gershwin' LPs.
Back at home, I told my parents about the experience during lunch on the following Saturday.
Later learned of his own NYC nightclub. Upon visiting there afterwards, in December usually, he would be engaged out of town with other highly renowned artists performing.

Sinatra's recording of 'The Second Time Around' was marvelous indeed. Do recall Bing Crosby earlier singing it to Nicole Maurey in the 20th. Century Fox movie of the same title.
The clip is worth looking for.
