The bass line during the first few measures of each verse does a walking drop, from E to A, hitting every note along the way...
...E - D# - D - C# - C - B - A# - A.

Then at the turn, the bass descends... G# - G - F# - B.

Every note except F is in the verse bass line!!

Seems to me that it would be very tricky to write melody and harmony against all those accidental root notes along the way. Beautiful stuff for you musicians out there to try. The key is E.

I fell in love with Kathy at age 13, in 1962 when I first met her and this song was popular. Unfortunately she and I were best friends and talked on the phone for hours, especially about her boyfriend. To this date, 58 years later, I still love her. She passed away three and a half years ago, and my love is as great as ever. This song has been my favorite since the first time I heard it in 1962. Perhaps we'll meet again in heaven.

As a heavy metal and punk rock kind of guy (being the 80's was my heyday) I'm also a musician and appreciate good music, and this was a very heartfelt song.

All of us guys knew a Kathy and wanted to be hers, but all she saw you as was a listening post and someone she could unload on. And then you had to sit and helplessly watch as she went to another guy,hoping that it would be you, and it never was.
Then graduation day came and aside form signing your yearbook and telling you what a nice guy you were, that's the last you ever saw of her. Decades later, an older man is looking at her picture in that yearbook, that timeless picture. And as you read the last words she wrote to you in your yearbook, you realize it's been decades later.

And you begin pining for her all over again..........

The power in this performance is that it is completely true to itself. It doesn't aim for Sinatra or Darin or even Anka. Mike Clifford just stands there and tells you his predicament so simply and hopefully that even the orchestra leader had sense enough to hold back. And for the three minutes of the song you are all in. Teen idol pop in its purest form.

When I was a kid this was one of the few 45's we had. I think my fathers' sister bought it because my mother only bought albums. They lived with us one summer. I fell in love with the song because I thought it was so sad yet beautiful & romantic.

wow, thanks for posting this. I heard this song playing while I was walking around Walgreens and it was the first time I heard it since I was a little girl of only 10. Yep I was in love with a Kathy in 8th grade (1969-70) but she liked the athletic type guys which I was not. We did stay as friends and I sent her a card and sympathy flowers after her mom died unexpectedly in 1978. Kathy really appreciated that.

I liked a gal back then in the 8th grade.She may as well have been Cathy to me.She was great and we were so close but I lived happy that we were connected in at least a way that was emotionally real. I always knew she cared deeply for me but not in the way as i did toward her.Still respect her as much 53 years later.Hope you lived a happy and blessed life Phyllis.

SuperNewman 2012, I saw your comment about the beautiful girl at 11 seconds and it looks to be actress Cathy O'Donnell from "The Best Years of Our Lives" a 1946 movie. I have seen "Marty" several times and I don't remember Cathy O'Donnell ever being in it. She did a number of old back and white film-oir movies among other movies of a different type. I could be wrong but it looks to me like Cathy O'Donnell in the picture.

It's a great sounding song with lyrics that all of us can identify with at one point in our lives. BTW, this original Broadway production of Grease cast member should've been a far bigger star. He had a fantastic voice and matinee idol looks.

To be honest with you, I am not Gay. I am a Libertarian who believes that everyone has a right to their chosen lifestyle . . .The gay community is very powerful in the entertainment industry. I guess if a entrtainers sexuality does not interfere with their ability to make money, they have full supports? The only one that puzzles me because it hasn't seemed to affect his career in any way is Neil Patrick Harris. Do you have any ideas as to why he seems to be so unaffected since he came out?

@kurtsupreme A little more on the issue. Who do you credit for singers able to acknowledge their gayness without killing their careers? David Bowie surely flaunted and made his gay side an advantage. The Village People not only got away with it but profitted from an openly gay act. Elton John didn't truly come out until Bowie and the Village People, if I got my time line correct. BTW, Anita Bryant was a fine singer and a Miss America runner-up, if that is related

@DickAllen4HOF Yes, I guess if it's an image that is being sold to heterosexuals it is more likely to be an issue than if it is just a product (music). Neil Patrick Harris seems to be an exception to that rule, however. His image does not seem to be so much affected since his disclosure about his sexuality. There have always been rumors about Paul Newman, George Clooney, and Keanu Reeves. Substantiating those rumors would definitely impact their heterosexual, leading man image.

@DickAllen4HOF I don't credit any individual; but rather, the times and the civil rights movement that raised awareness on gay liberation. In the pre-AIDS era of the 1970's and early 80's, gays and bisexuals gained wide acceptance. The AIDS epidemic scared the hell out of the straights and set gay people back 50 years. Those that you mentioned were from the 70's. Anita Bryant was a bigot who came out AGAINST gays in the late 70's. Mike Clifford was from the early 60's, too early for acceptance.

Mike Clifford was a real talent in the early 1960's. He was handsome, had a great voice, and made some nice music. Today, it is a national disgrace that his career was cut short because he had an obviously gay demeanor and the powers that be did not think that his effeminate mannerisms would interest heterosexual teenage girls...................things still haven't really changed all that much , have they? It's a real shame!

Beautiful tune but very atypical for 1962 top 40 entries. Probably much too slow and subdued to sell to teen-agers of the day, which is most likely the reason it wasn't a bigger hit.

@kurtsupreme I threw Anita Bryant's name into the mix as her anti-gay campaign is household knowledge. I don't know how much of her was bigotry and how much was ignorance. She did pay dearly for her misguided campaign. Moreover, it backfired as the gay community coalesced. I guess how well an openly gay artist is accepted is based on his image. If the much of the performer's success is based on his looks and appeal, gayness will hurt him more than an artist who's strictly a musician.

No one who loves sex with females as much as I can possilby be labeled homosexual. I would say that I don't care about your label, but, then again, you're God himself, aren't you? @kurtsupreme Interesting chat. Bisexual and gay are related but very different. Carry Grant, James Dean, and John Lennon are documented as bisesxual. Lennon was a genius so his sexuality would never be an issue. Bowie was also a genius and used his bisexuality to his advantage. Ricky Martin (No genius) hinted at being gay and killed his career. If Grant and Dean were outed as Bi back in their day, it would've killed their careers as well. The list of rumoured gay celebs is very long.
