My Funny Valentine
Miles Davis (With John Coltrane) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one here can love or understand me
Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me
Pack up all my cares and woe, here I go, winging low
Bye, bye, blackbird

Where somebody waits for me
Sugar's sweet, so is she
Bye, bye, blackbird

No one here can love or understand me
Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me
Make my bed and light the light, I'll arrive late tonight
Blackbird, bye, bye

Bye, bye, blackbird
Where somebody waits for me
Sugar's sweet, so is she
Bye, bye, blackbird

No one here can love or understand me
Oh what hard luck stories they all hand me

Make my bed and light the light, I'll arrive late tonight
Blackbird, bye, bye

Overall Meaning

The song "Bye Bye Blackbird" is a classic jazz standard that has been interpreted by many artists over the years. The lyrics tell the story of a person who feels misunderstood and unloved by those around them. They are packing up their cares and woes and leaving, hoping to find someone who will appreciate and love them for who they are. The repeated chorus of "bye bye blackbird" emphasizes the longing for escape and a new beginning.

The singer suggests that no one around them can understand or appreciate them. They hear only "hard luck stories" from those in their life, which likely contributes to their feelings of isolation and the desire for a fresh start. The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is leaving under the cover of darkness, hoping to find someone waiting for them upon arrival.

Overall, "Bye Bye Blackbird" is a song about the universal desire to be loved and understood. It speaks to the theme of leaving behind the things that hold us down and finding new opportunities for happiness and fulfillment.

Matt I think you've missed and disregarded that it's a chance to play with a legend, icon and a absolute genius
I concur with your description it's sublime

May I add that personally I would describe the track as musically nirvana + wicked

All the best and take care Matt

Rest in Peace Miles Davis

My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet your my favorite work of art
Is your Figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little week?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?
But don't change your hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is Valentines day
Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to Speak
Are you smart
But don't change your hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day

Had it not been for Miles, I would have never known this song. I have so much to say yet no words to express the emotions I feel whenever I listen to this song. It's like excitement of knowing an old lost friend whom I have been reunited with. Like a trip back in time to nostalgic moments. It's a youthful feeling of spring and rain yet a heavy anticipation of winter. A song I have played so many times and I have never grown wary of it. I love it every day. I play it every day. It's like my favourite things. A melody that calms me down. ❤️😭

Funny story. I am watching "Homeland Season" 1 Episode 10 and this song comes on. I've heard many different versions of 'My Funny Valentine', but never this one. I tell myself that trumpet sounds like Miles Davis. I come to YouTube to check if Miles Davis played "My Funny Valentine" and if it is the same one as in "Homeland."

And lo and behold

I remember listening to this at least a few years ago. I've recently got a stereo for my birthday and now i'm borrowing my dad's cds. This track alone blew my mind. Jazz is amazing.
