Early in the mornin'
Before the crack of dawn,
Sittin' here thinkin'
Oh why was I born?
So broken hearted,
How can I go on?
I was so happy
With you by my side,
You told me you loved me,
But honey you lied.
You left me here cryin',
How can I go on?
Since you've been gone, since you've been gone.
The night seems like a million years, mmhm,
Waitin' 'til the break of day appears, oh oh oh.
All night long weepin' like a willow,
Tossin' and turnin' on my tear stained pillow,
Guess I'm gonna drown in my own tears.
Gonna go walkin'
By the railroad track,
I'm gonna let the choo-choo cross over my back.
Life ain't worth livin',
How can I go on?
Since you've been gone, since you've been gone.
The night seems like a million years,
Waitin' 'til the break of day appears, mmm.
All night long weepin' like a willow,
Tossin' and turnin' on my tear stained pillow,
Guess I'm gonna drown in my own tears.
Gonna go walkin'
By the railroad track,
I'm gonna let the choo-choo cross over my back.
Life ain't worth livin',
How can I go on?
Since you've been gone, since you've been gone,
Since you've been go-o-o-o-one.
Ya ya, ya ya ya ya ya ya.
Since you've been gone...
The lyrics of Millie Small's "Since You've Been Gone" paint a picture of a heartbroken individual who is struggling to come to terms with the end of a relationship. The song begins with the singer sitting and thinking about their existence, questioning why they were even born after being left so broken-hearted. The repetition of "since you've been gone" in the chorus emphasizes the drastic impact that the end of the relationship has had on the singer's life.
The second verse further illustrates how happy the singer was in the relationship and how that happiness was shattered when their partner lied to them and left them crying. The imagery of the night seeming like a million years emphasizes the singer's struggle to cope with their emotions, as they wait for daybreak to come. The third verse takes a more literal turn, as the singer contemplates walking along the railroad track and letting the train's wheels run over them, ultimately concluding that life isn't worth living without their former partner.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of despair and hopelessness, as the singer grapples with the pain of heartbreak and the seeming impossibility of moving on. The repetition of "since you've been gone" highlights the all-encompassing impact of the relationship's end and reinforces the singer's sense of loss.

In 1965, I lived in a group apartment. One of the other guys had (Little) Millie Small's album that featured "My Boy Lollipop." This song was on the album. When I heard it, I just played it over and over, nearly making the other roomies insane. Today's the first time I've heard this since. My God. What wonderful memories from a tremendous and ageless voice. Thanks, Millie. And thanks to you WillerRemyMa. Allen

I recall seeing Millie at the Brooklyn Fox Theater in 64 or 65. I think the Dixie Cups were there that day. She had a great stage presence and an adorable childlike smile. Come to NY Mille !
