Saguquka sathi ‘bheka’
Nants’ iPata Pata
Saguquka sathi ‘bheka’
Nants’ iPata Pata

Yiyo mama, yiyo mama
Nants’ iPata Pata
Yiyo mama, yiyo mama
Nants’ iPata Pata

Pata Pata is the name of the dance
We do down Johannesburg where
And everybody starts to move
As soon as Pata Pata starts to play

Saguquka sathi ‘bheka’
Nants’ iPata Pata
Saguquka sathi ‘bheka’
Nants’ iPata Pata

Yiyo mama, yiyo mama
Nants’ iPata Pata
Yiyo mama, yiyo mama
Nants’ iPata Pata

Every Friday and Saturday Night
It’s Pata Pata time

The dance keeps going all night long
Til’ the morning sun begins to shine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song Pata Pata by Miriam Makeba (Ofenbach Remix) are a celebration of joy and dance. The chorus "Saguquka sathi ‘bheka’, Nants’ iPata Pata" means "We have changed, we say watch, here it is, the Pata Pata." The song refers to the Pata Pata dance, which is a popular dance in South Africa that involves hip-swaying moves and a lot of energy. The verses talk about the dance starting up and everyone beginning to move, as well as the tradition of dancing to the Pata Pata every Friday and Saturday night, keeping the dance going all night long until sunrise.

Overall, the song celebrates the joy of movement and coming together to dance, and highlights the infectious energy of the Pata Pata dance. The repetition of the chorus and the call-and-response structure of the verses emphasize the communal nature of the dance and the sense of unity it brings.

I was 15 the first time I heard this great piece of music. I'm 68 now. Still enjoying it.

Indeed. I first heard Mama Africa sing this in 1967 (I was 8 years old). This song embodies inspiration, encouragement, and a zest for life that overcomes adversity. All that she went through didn't break her but empowered one of the many voices speaking out justice, peace, and humanity. RIP Mama Africa.
