Like A Mirror
Morphine Lyrics

Like a mirror I'm nothing. I'm nothing. I'm nothing till you look at me.
I'm like a mirror. I'm like a mirror. I'm nothing till you look at me.
I'm like a mirror. I'm like a mirror. I'm nothing till you look at me.
I'm like a mirror. I'm like a mirror. I'm nothing till you look at me.
Martha Lee.
Leave your world, come to me. I'm closer to you than I seem.
Wish upon this melody and come to me Martha Lee.
Leave your world and join me soon. Leave your world behind.
You can take the Saturn Line. In no time, no time.

I know a ship that's leaving soon. Oh, in fact this afternoon.
So don't forget your parachute. I'll be there to catch you.

And you my future constellation. Climb up here in the sky with me.
Leave your world and come to me. I'm closer to you than I seem.

Oh, wish upon this melody and come to me. Come to me.
Leave your world and join me soon. Martha Lee. Martha Lee.

I know a ship that's leaving soon. In fact this very afternoon.
So don't forget your parachute and I'll be there to catch you.

I'm like a mirror. I'm like a mirror. I'm nothing till you look at me.
I'm like a mirror. I'm like a mirror. I'm nothing till you look at me.

Overall Meaning

The song "Like A Mirror" by Morphine is a haunting, introspective track that explores themes of identity, self-worth and the power of connection. The repeated refrain of "I'm nothing till you look at me" highlights the idea that our sense of self is often derived from the way others see us. The song's protagonist, Martha Lee, is encouraged to leave behind her world and join the singer on a journey where she can be fully realized in their connection. The line "I know a ship that's leaving soon" suggests that this opportunity may not be available forever and Martha Lee must act quickly if she wants to experience this profound connection.

The song's lyrics are deceptively simple, but they pack a powerful emotional punch. The repeated use of the line "I'm like a mirror" reinforces the idea that our sense of self is intricately tied to our connections with others. The line "Leave your world, come to me. I'm closer to you than I seem" implies that Martha Lee may feel disconnected from the world around her and that the singer offers her a sense of grounding and understanding.

Gentlemen and women, If you are spending and evening with a lover, drinking wine and conversing, I can think of no better song to lead to the bedroom. Mr. Sandman would approve. Cheers.

Love this song. This track has always felt like a Tricky song that Morphine covered. I'm sure,Tricky (and Trip Hop in general), are responsible for birthing this song....and Morphine was the perfect vessel to deliver it. Soooo...daaamn...eroootic.

Morphine is one of my favorite bands, ever. But they're so frustrating to me, so many times, with song lengths. Some of their tracks just need to be longer, imo. This one has so much more room to go. The chord changes, voice etc. right at the end hint at something amazing to come, then it just effing ends.
