Suddenly Last Summer
Motels Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It happened one summer, it happened one time
It happened forever, for a short time
A place for a moment, an end to dream
Forever I loved you, forever it seemed

[Chorus: x2]
One summer never ends, one summer never began
It keeps me standing still, it takes all my will
And then suddenly last summer
Sometimes I never leave, but sometimes I would
Sometimes I stay too long, sometimes I would
Sometimes it frightens me, sometimes it would
Sometimes I'm all alone and wish that I could

And then suddenly last summer

[Chorus]

And then suddenly last summer

Until suddenly last summer

And then suddenly last summer
Until suddenly last summer

Overall Meaning

The song "Suddenly Last Summer" by The Motels is a melancholic reflection of a past summer love that ended abruptly. The opening lines "It happened one summer, it happened one time" introduces us to the fleeting nature of summer romances. The singer describes this as a moment in time that seemed to last forever, but was only temporary. The place they shared together that summer, was a place where they had dreams of being forever. The chorus "One summer never ends, one summer never began, it keeps me standing still, it takes all my will" highlights the singer's struggle in moving on from this love, with the thought that it could've gone on forever and that it's difficult to let go.

The next verse talks about the mixed feelings that the singer has about this relationship. There are times that they wanted to stay and never leave, and times they knew they needed to go. The summer relationship was so intense that it even scares the singer. However, there are moments of loneliness that make them wish for things to go back to the way they were. The reiteration of the chorus stresses the unresolved feelings of the singer towards this past love. Lastly, the repetition of "and then suddenly last summer" emphasizes the abrupt ending of their summer romance, with no possibility of closure.

This summer it will be 40 summers ago that this song was released. I actually felt tears coming down my face as it played. When it came out I was 10 years old and I’m now 50. Hearing it again made me realize that life is flying by and I’m running out of summers to improve my life.

@melroze
