Mother's Finest was one of the "first real rock bands with both black and white members". Their music was a blend of funky rhythm, heavy guitars and expressive rock singing. Their debut album Mother's Finest from 1976 today is a rare collector's piece and contained with the ironic song "Niggizz Can't Sang Rock & Roll" their musical program (although they were criticized for it by an important reverend and had to suspend it from their live concerts). In 1978 they were guests in German broadcast "Rockpalast" and with one concert (recently reedited in Europe as DVD Mother's Finest - At Rockpalast together with a 2003 live concert) they gathered cult status in Europe which lasts until today.
In the late seventies they produced more soul-oriented albums and at the beginning of the eighties some heavy rock as on Iron Age. In the nineties they were back with "Black radio won't play this record", a funk metal album, and last CD is "Meta-funk'n-physical" from 2004 which is more hip hop- and electronic beats-oriented. They are led by rock singer Joyce Kennedy and they have recorded apart from the live DVD two live CDs
Hit songs: "Baby Love", "Piece of the Rock", "Mickey's Monkey", "Love Changes". Joyce Kennedy also had a hit duet with Jeffrey Osborne in 1984, "The Last Time I Made Love."
Most recently, Joyce Kennedy was seen on the international Daughters Of Soul tour along with Sandra St. Victor, Nona Hendryx, Lalah Hathaway (daughter of Donny Hathaway), Indira Khan (daughter of Chaka Khan), and Simone (daughter of Nina Simone).

Mother's Finest Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A poor man lookin for one
A chainstore owner lookin for another store
A hungry man lookin for a hamburger bone
(Chorus)
Get it get it get it yeah
Get get get get get ooh get it get it get it
A rock star lookin for another million seller
The DJ say you can't have none
Now go on and play your disco music
I got to rock n roll myself all night long
(Chorus)
Give me a piece of luck
Give me some peace of mind
Give me a piece of yours
Now take a piece of mine
Get it get it get it
Get a piece of rock
Get it get it get it
Get a piece of rock
Get it
Mary had a little lamb
With feet just as white as snow
Everywhere that Mary went
You know the lamb should a go go
The lyrics from Mother's Finest's song "Piece of the Rock" explore the universal desire for success and prosperity. The song starts by describing different people, from a millionaire to a poor man, all looking for something more. The chorus emphasizes the title of the song, encouraging listeners to get their own piece of the rock, or their own share of success.
The second verse shifts to the entertainment industry, with a rock star seeking another million-selling record and a DJ refusing to share the limelight. The lyrics show how even those who seem to have it all still crave more success and recognition. The song ends on a playful note, with a reference to the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb," suggesting that success is something that everyone, even a child, desires.
Overall, the lyrics of "Piece of the Rock" reflect a relatable desire for success and prosperity, regardless of background or industry. The song encourages listeners to strive for their own piece of the rock and not be content with mediocrity.

I worked as the senior sound system tech for over 100 Mothers Finest shows. They are wonderful people and have a unique ability to satisfy an audience. Now, I'm 473 dog years old and wish them well from Thailand.

I probably met you somewhere down the line, I played with doc Holliday, kruella DeVille, Bo Black, Maniacal, a few bands during the '80s and '90s. Mother's finest was the most kick ass funk rock band that ever was for many years there. I distinctly remember them sounding fantastic whenever I saw them play live. We opened for them a couple times actually. I'm from New Bern North Carolina. We played with them at Jaycee county fairgrounds I believe.

It's so sad that groups like them never got to perform at shows like The Grammys. Could you imagine it, they would blow the roof off that show and that crowd!

Best underrated, underexposed, under everything band ever. You had to see them in person to understand what I am saying.

You're right!! I saw them in 1978 at Winthrop University.

I've been fortunate to have seen them 3 times and I enjoyed every show. They're fantastic.

Couldn't have said it better! Saw them; was especially curious if "Give you All the Love Inside" would be as spectacular as on the Live-Album....Yes it was!!!

I agree 100%! One of the best live performing groups I have ever heard/seen. BTW, I have been to over 100 concerts and back in the day I went to over 20 rock band/jam competitions and MF always brought the house down and funked their asses off. BTW, I believe they are still performing live today.

They are! My ears are still ringing from being on the second row. Worth every moment and as good as they were in the early 70s!
