This case is so strange and I honestly do think that he killed himself, or at least that was the initial plan. A few things:
He inherited the rifle a couple months before the murders from his father. His father had died near poverty, meaning he had no way to pull himself out of debt but he did take his sons to the range.
In messages to one of his mistresses, he claimed he needed a few hundred thousand Euros, so it does seem he was in a bit of substantial debt all around. He may have needed 50-60,000 Euros right at that moment, but it does seem that his debt was by far larger. He also told this mistress about the dark fantasies of killing his family or killing himself so his wife could get the 600,000 life insurance.
The two youngest children disappeared first, with their last known sighting being on April 3rd. There wasn't a trace of blood in the house according to French police. It's possible he lied to the school about them being sick and simply killed them elsewhere before coming home with the bodies (there is a vehicle still missing), telling the family something else. His oldest son (adopted at the age of two at his marriage to Agnes) and Agnes were probably the next to die, but there are sightings of them eating out and the like before they vanished. Thomas was the last to die and he was buried separately from the family. It's probable that they all died on different days and had no idea that the others were dead. Agnes was the only one with no trace of drugs in her system, though it is believed she too was shot in her sleep due to her sleep apnea machine being interrupted on what is believed to be her last night alive.
No one can account for how he moved all that earth out from under the back patio or what in the world he did with it. Xavier is said to have had neck/back issues and that's a lot to move with just a shovel and two hands.
Given his behavior and where he disappeared, it seems probable that he was aiming towards suicide. Different extensive searches have turned up nothing. With his financial situation, it isn't all that possible to do a vanishing act so complete and if he is alive, he had some help.
This one has always really bothered me. Despite how close the house is to its neighbors, no one heard anything amiss. A silencer only goes so far here. No one noticed him and his yard project. His letters to his family reads like a last will and testament with instructions on what to do with the valuables remaining. He was already fantasizing about killing all of them and himself. The idea that members of the family were happy with no idea how much was amiss when others of them were already dead is haunting.

You missed some vital detail, such as wife Agnes being a frequent contributer to an online forum where she described her problems and deep unhappiness with her husband and life. In a post from 2004, seven years before the murders, she wrote her husband had commented that the death of their whole family 'would not be a tragedy'. He likely had this idea to annihilate them all and start a new life for many, many years and in 2011, had perfected the details enough and had his failures pouring in enough to just do it. The secret agent shit is just grandiose garbage, typical of fucking narcissists who have a inherent need to sound impressive even when they are in he midst of total personal failure.

@Secret Soul Survivor I agree. I’ve NEVER heard of him making light of the victims or their suffering and fate. He always takes the piss on the perpetrator/s, which is warranted and not wrong at all. They deserve it. Mike is always very respectful, despite cracking jokes. Those accusations are totally baseless.

@smokearoni I am wondering if you watch these videos or if there should be concern on your interpretation of the videos.....the humor and insult is directed toward the criminal, not the victim.
He tells the story of the victim, not the glorification of the murder or the murder.
If you do not like it, absolutely your right. You know though, if you don't like it you can always scroll instead of troll. My guess is you would be a happier person when you understand you can be in control of what you don't want to see instead of looking at it and getting mad.
