It's actually one of the most realistic when you think about it. Duels to the death usually were over in a matter of seconds, as the more skilled swordsman would execute techniques meant to kill quickly. The risk in drawing out a duel is fatigue.

Preston did several things correctly. First, in their previous duel, he knew Brandt was testing out his weaknesses. So he allowed Brandt's hubris to make the assumption that he had Preston figured out. Second, during this duel, Preston executes 3 cuts with the blade. 2 to disarm, the final to kill. Simple, efficient, and precise. Third, no monologuing, he remains objective. Preston allows his opponent to speak but remains intensely focused on the goal at hand at all times.

I just love a movie that is not afraid to let the Protagonist be completely over-powered. It gets so old when watching a movie about some badass, and half way thru there's the obligatory drama of them either losing their powers/abilities, or having to face off against a "better" version of themselves that was conveniently made by the villain.

This movie was just like, "nope. He's a badass. He wins. Every time."

What? The opposite is the case from what I see since 2 decades. Protagonist saves the day cliché. You see badass Villians like this, and then they are in the end idiotic cowards with no deepth at all. You can especially see in the villians face in the Final fight fight he will lose, he looks nervous while the Protagonist remains calm & confident. This are Obvious indicators the Protagonist will win, in most of the cases. At least he could have delivered a fight where he also damages the Protagonist heavily, but no, just the same old story that happends in more than every second movie/show/cartoon/Anime/3d etc. Etc.

This isn't overpowered, just better skilled, there is a difference. People in real life vary in skill levels, hence why some people go pro and others do not. Bale is the best of all of them, it's not an overpowernment. Nothing is supernatural here either people can fight with swords and guns in real life.

I love this scene. As with everything else in the movie things are not what they seem, and we suddenly learn that he has always held back, even before he stopped taking the drug, so the "bosses" have no idea how dangerous he really is... Just think of the training match in the start with his new "partner". It conveniently ended in a draw, allowing him to completely surprise him in this fight.

When he's fighting the guards, the second 'sword' he grabs is actually just a sheath for a sword, which seconds later he uses to block an attack, which slices the sheath into a sharp point which he then uses to stab someone. That's bloody awesome.

I always thought the tripping of an opponent with a sword was stupid in this scene. Now that I see that he actually trips him with the sheath it makes much more sense! This just proves what a genius film this is. Making that fight scene must have taken weeks of training to get everything perfect.

I love the swordfight scene, because it's in absolute contrast to the absurdity of the gunfighting. Real swordfighting isn't clashing and clanging of blades and pirouetting around (which is what the gunfighting is). It's over in seconds and you pretty much get taken out of the fight by a single blow.

This is such an underrated movie. As an enthusiast of swords I could nitpick all sorts of things with the fight scenes, but truth is there is more to a film than that. I saw this movie once, a while ago, and to this day I'm haunted by the death of that lady who was arrested in the film. All I can say is if you hadn't seen this film, see it. It is good.

I always thought this part was supposed to a bit of a humorous thing. About halfway through the movie, you see Preston and Brandt dueling and being on equal footing. Near the end, Preston charges down the hallway killing dozens of guard like some sort of unstoppable killing machine. He is then confronted by Brandt, leading the viewer to believe that we're about to see the epic showdown of two martial artists pulling out all stops. But nope. Fight's over in a matter of seconds.
Creators were like: Oh, you thought you were going to see a cool fight? Psyche!

When he fought the black guy the first time, Preston was feeling ( the black guy also feels, like the father and most of the people in power) so they were on equal grounds. But as we seen in the previous clip where Preston is on that machine, he manages to stop all his feelings and become what he was, a Grammaton Cleric with no feelings, better then everyone. Thats why the Father wanted to get rid of him, cause only Preston could bring down the corrupt government.

As beautiful and amazing as this movie was, there was no way those men were hiding there. They clearly weren't standing behind the pillars, because with the direction the shadows were being cast, either their bodies or their shadows would have been visible. That doesn't even mention the two guys that were standing there right next to Preston, in full view, assumedly saying with their eyes "just act like we're not here."

Brandt wasn't the black cleric, like Preston and Podridge. He was the grey cleric. It means he' s been quite fresh and inexperienced. His uniform was grey for the whole movie. He "earned" the black uniform by "acting the role" - making Preston safe to give up the resistance, not by years of practicing the combat, and killing people.

One thing I immediately noticed after Preston entering, is how the whole hall was decorated. The moment the camera started moving around at 0:10, I knew I had the same thoughts as him. If they didn't feel, they wouldn't have any sense of aesthetic, so that's what gave away the fact that Dupont didn't take the doze before he confessed that he feels.

Remember, when Preston and Brandt were sparring earlier in the film, Preston was still adjusting to having emotions, and the point was not to kill each other. Preston has years of experience and is basically the top of the Clerics in terms of skill and operational records, even after he shows off why, Brandt is still cocky. He's expecting a similar fight to the spar, only he is totally unprepared for Preston in Tranquil Fury mode with the intent to kill.

Also, IIRC, Diggs (Brandt's actor) needed to jump to his next project and the filming had gone a little longer than expected, hence the quick resolution to his fight. It does a nice job setting up the fight with Dupont, though.

My main problem with this flick...everyone is supposed to be on a drug that suppresses emotions, but Taye Diggs must've not read that part of the script...he's mugging and smiling all the way through the movie.

Best thing about this scene is that the real point was that Bale's character was just playing Diggs earlier in the movie. He could have killed him at any moment.

And then he did.

You can tell they got their idea of the setting of this scene from the end battle of Streets of Rage 2, with Shiva and Mr X. Everything from the look of the luxurious room with the expensive curtains and huge windows letting out the morning glare, to the way the boss is sitting on his chair, with his bodyguard standing next to him with his arms folded.

They even have the protagonist kicking the asses of the regular goons when he enters the room, before fighting one on one with the bodyguard, and finally the main boss.
