Lighthouse
Mr. Pit vs. Fisherman & Hawkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Coast to coast ghost towns and empty roads
How we keep the lights on, no one knows
Still it keeps on shining through the night
As the piles rise and rise and rise

Coast to coast ghost towns and empty roads
How we keep the lights on, no one knows
Still it keeps on shining through the night
Is it so bright, you avert your eyes?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Lighthouse" by Mr. Pit vs. Fisherman & Hawkins evoke a haunting image of deserted places and desolate landscapes stretching from coast to coast. The mention of 'ghost towns and empty roads' creates a sense of abandonment and loneliness, suggesting a world that has been left behind or forgotten. This imagery may symbolize the feeling of isolation and solitude that can sometimes accompany the human experience, as well as the passage of time and the impermanence of existence.

The theme of keeping the lights on despite the emptiness and mystery surrounding their source adds an intriguing layer of ambiguity to the lyrics. The line 'How we keep the lights on, no one knows' hints at a hidden or unknown power maintaining the illumination in these desolate places. This enigmatic element invites listeners to ponder the nature of this light and what it represents - hope, resilience, or perhaps a metaphorical beacon guiding lost souls through the darkness.

The repetition of the phrase 'Still it keeps on shining through the night' reinforces the idea of perseverance in the face of adversity. The image of the light persisting through the darkness can be interpreted as a symbol of strength and endurance, suggesting that even in the most challenging circumstances, there is always a glimmer of hope and possibility. This resilience is further emphasized by the rising piles mentioned in the lyrics, which might signify the obstacles and struggles that continue to accumulate but are not insurmountable.

The question posed in the final lines - 'Is it so bright, you avert your eyes?' - introduces a sense of discomfort or unease in the midst of this mysterious illumination. The brightness of the light may be overwhelming or blinding, prompting the listener to turn away or avoid confronting its intensity. This inner conflict between being drawn to the light and being repelled by it adds a layer of complexity to the emotional landscape of the song, inviting reflection on the complexities of human nature and the choices we make when faced with uncertainty and ambiguity.

Jack Pascal worked for the Buffalo Fire Dept. in the 1960’s and was the Official Photographer of this endeavor. He had told me of being instructed not to touch anything while photographing the scene! The public was not allowed on the dry riverbed!

It took quite awhile for the Army Corp of Engineers to create the Coffer Dam, then for the water to drain nearly completely. The Engineers realized they couldn’t remove the rocks at the bottom, as it was cost prohibitive and the boulders assisted with the erosion control. The Joint Commission with the C.O.E. therefore changed their mission to reinforcing the 10,000 year old cliff face to postpone additional erosion of the Devonian Era shale & Limestone middle layer, below the top Limestone & Dolomite layer.

There were many “potholes” under the drying riverbed that had accumulated debris. The Army Corp of Engineers set up many 55 gal. barrels that they filled up of anchors, outboard motors, boat parts, other debris and even coins, that were found after the water was stopped.

One of the workers jumped into a pothole, and held a large Walleye in his upraised arms. Jack shot some pictures, which were picked up by either UPI or AP at the time, one of the photos went viral, earning him $1.00 commission from every newspaper that ran the photo!

Per these “bodies”, they were relatively fresh; per Wikipedia: “During this time, two bodies were removed from under the falls, including a man who had been seen jumping over the falls, and the body of a woman, which was discovered once the falls dried”

I have been a diver in the Niagara River since 1973, and find lots of trash, relics & treasure myself, as well as many unidentifiable bone each week!
