Let's Dance
Mr. Ward Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let's dance, put on your red shoes and dance the blues
Let's dance, to the song they're playin' on the radio

Let's sway, while color lights up your face
Let's sway, sway through the crowd to an empty space

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
Because my love for you
Would break my heart in two
If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower

Let's dance, for fear your grace should fall
Let's dance, for fear tonight is all

Let's sway, you could look into my eyes
Let's sway, under the moonlight, this serious moonlight

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
Because my love for you
Would break my heart in two
If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower

Let's dance, put on your red shoes and dance the blues
Let's dance, to the song they're playin' on the radio

Let's sway, you could look into my eyes
Let's sway, under the moonlight, this serious moonlight

Overall Meaning

The song "Let's Dance" by Mr. Ward has a lively and upbeat rhythm that encourages the listener to get on their feet and dance. The lyrics are addressed to a partner, inviting them to dance and forget their worries. The first verse instructs the partner to put on their red shoes and dance the blues, indicating that dancing can be a way to ease one's sorrows. The second verse suggests that dancing can also be a way to escape the crowd and find some personal space. The pre-chorus emphasizes the loyalty and commitment of the singer to their partner, promising to run or hide with them if needed. The chorus repeats the invitation to dance and sway while the moon is shining, reminding the partner that this is an opportunity that should not be missed.

The lyrics of "Let's Dance" have been interpreted in different ways. Some see it as a straightforward love song, while others believe that it speaks to the experiences of young people in the 1950s, where dancing was a form of rebellion and self-expression. The reference to red shoes has been linked to "The Wizard of Oz" and its theme of following one's dreams. The line "for fear your grace should fall" has been interpreted as a caution against losing one's dignity while dancing, while the reference to the serious moonlight has been seen as a nod to David Bowie's song of the same name.

This cover is so gorgeous - interpretations of songs can really give you another perspective of the lyrics. I love this

I had always thought Bowie's song fine: punchy, synthesized post-disco funk. But, M. Ward's version won my heart. Tender. And the first time I truly absorbed the lyric: "Because my love for you would break my heart in two if you should fall into my arms and tremble like a flower." Wow... love it!

Same with me. That is a beautiful, tender and heartbreaking lyric that the original buries in its quirky melodic arrangement.

M Ward wrings all of the emotion out of that line. Opened up the song for me

Me too, never like the original

This is my and my wife’s song. After 14 years wherever we are in life if this comes on we stop and dance together. My greatest joy these days is dancing to this song knowing our three kiddos are watching. They get to see that, even when times get tough, there’s always room for beautiful things. I only hope my kids can have the joy my wife and I have with their spouses some day.

This version of Let's dance appreciates the poetry contained in the verses of the original song by David Bowie. Loved!

Love this cover. I'm a diehard Bowie fan but I've got to say Lets dance isn't one of my favourite Bowie songs. Listening to this version has made me appreciate it more.
