Straight No Chaser
Mr Hudson - www.music.pbtone.com Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Straight, no chaser.
We don't waste our time on fakeness.
One glass one shot is all it takes us.
Better this than fade away

So, our story goes this empty city
Crowded skies are clearing but I'm lonesome.
No! Bring on the night.
There's work a plenty.
Fluorescent lamps are passing in slow motion,

Only I will wander
Only I can leave

So we set the scene, a sea of faces.
Laser eyes are watching as we close in.
Don't play innocent.

I know your thinking.
You're chasing conversation out of focus.

Overall Meaning

In Mr Hudson's song "Straight No Chaser," the lyrics express a straightforward, no-nonsense attitude towards life. The singer states that he and his friends do not waste their time pretending to be something they are not. They prefer to keep things simple and to the point. One drink is enough for them, as they recognize that too much of a good thing can lead to a bad outcome. They would rather live life to the fullest, than slowly fade away.

The next verse describes a scene of a desolate city and the feeling of loneliness with the skies clearing, yet nothing changing. The singer is setting up the picture where he is isolated in a world filled with people. He encourages the night to come as he has lots of work to do. The fluorescent lamps pass slowly and only he can leave his situation, as he is the only one capable of making his own change.

The final verse describes a social scene where the singer is surrounded by faces with laser eyes watching them. He knows people are not always truthful about what they want and sometimes people are more interested in the chase. The song overall is about authentic living, going against fake pretenses, and ultimately finding one's own path.

"The 12 Days Of Christmas"

On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me
A partridge in a pear tree
On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me
2 turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree

On the 4th day of Chris

On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love gave to me
5 golden rings!
4 calling birds, 3 french hens, 2 turtle doves
And a partridge in a pear tree

On the 9th day of Christmas my true love gave to me
(On the 8th day of Christmas my true love gave to me)
9 ladies dancing, 8 ladies dancing
(8 maids a-milking, 7 maids a-milking)
7 ladies dancing, 6 ladies dancing
(6 maids a-milking)
5!
Better not shout, you better not cry
You better not, in a pear tree

On the 9th
No!
On the 8th
No!

On the 7th day of Christmas my true love gave to me
(Deck the halls with boughs of holly)
7 swans a-swimming, 6 geese a-laying
(Here we come a-wassailing, among the leaves so)
5 golden rings!
(Fa la la la)

4 calling birds, 3 french hens, 2 turtle doves
(Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green)
The boar's head in hand bear I bedeck'd with bays
And partridge in a pear tree

On the 11th day of Christmas my true love gave to me
11 pipers piping, 10 lords a-leaping
(Ding, dong)
9 ladies dancing, 8 maids a-milking
(Ding, dong)
7 swans a swimming, 6 geese a laying
(Ding, dong)
5 golden rings, 4 calling birds
3 french hens, 2 turtle doves
And Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!

On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me
I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready, a dreidel I shall play
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
Sorry...

On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me

On the 12th day my true love gave to me
12 drummers drumming like Olympus upon the Serengeti
11 pipers piping, 10 lords a-leaping!

9 ladies dancing they were dancing for me
8 maids a-milking, they were milking just for me
I had Christmas down in Africa
I had Christmas down in Africa

I had Christmas down in Africa
(5 golden rings!)
I had Christmas down in Africa
(5 golden rings!)
I had Christmas down in Africa
(5 golden rings!)
Gonna deck the halls and do the things we never had

Partridge in a big pear tree
Partridge in a big pear tree

@Mr402TA

Harmony is hard enough, but organizing chaos so perfectly is freakin amazing.

@JoshBG20

"I had Christmas down in Africa, FIVE GOLDEN RINGS!" That falsetto is amazing, love it!

@ashuhlea

The fact that when I first heard this I cringed like "oh damn they messed up," now I can't hear Africa by ToTo without singing Christmas in Africa.
