Mt. Desolation started during Keane's Perfect Symmetry World Tour in 2009 during a conversation in a bar in Dublin, Ireland. Rice-Oxley and Quin, Keane pianist and bassist, respectively, had the idea of making a country album, but the duo said they did not think they were going to release it. The album was recorded and released in 2010. Members of Noah & The Whale, The Killers, The Long Winters, The Staves and Mumford & Sons were involved in the album's recording. After their debut show at The Lexington in London in July 2010, the live band toured the UK in September 2010 and the USA & Canada supporting Mumford & Sons in October 2010. The Staves supported the band's UK tour dates.
Their second album "When the Night Calls" was released on 25 May 2018. It was followed by a short tour of the UK in June 2018.
On a blustery and cold night in September 2009 in Dublin, two friends, Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin, decided (whilst in wildly animated conversation about music and probably also well on their way to needing a taxi home) that they would make a country album. As with so many ideas that come about on a belly full of Jameson's, in the cold light of day it did not seem like such a good plan. Two English men trying to sing like Hank Williams was definitely a recipe for disaster. The whole thing was forgotten about in the time it took to recover from the headache that morning. But the headache was to return.
Out of the blue a couple of months later Tim emailed Jesse a rough demo of 'Mt. Desolation - Departure'. Not wanting to be outdone, Jesse vollied back a demo of 'Mt. Desolation - Annie Ford'. Before they knew it there were half a dozen songs and without really putting much planning into it, the idea to make a record was resurrected.
Enlisting the help of friends from various other bands the newly formed group went into Eastcote studios in London at the snowy start of this year. With production wizard Emery Dobyns patiently manning the controls, the idea was to record as much of the album live as possible, in true country style. For the finishing touches, they experimented with whatever extra noises they felt like (cue dustbin lids, anvils, bullhorns and heavily distorted theremins) and a supporting cast of friends who would regularly stop by and add their ideas, whether invited or not. The end of the recording sessions marked the end of the first chapter of the story.

Mt. Desolation Lyrics

Oh my valentine
Say goodbye
(What)
Two lovers disturb the dust
Black water embraces us
Dried flowers and turpentine
Your beauty uprooted me
Crude hopeless desire in me
Thoughts churning in a sea of wine
Valentine
Valentine
Valentine
Oh my valentine
Say goodbye
Oh my valentine
Cold chemicals in my heart
But no charm can hold back the flood
Wires cut between the heart and mind
Valentine
Valentine
Valentine
Oh my valentine
Say goodbye
Oh my valentine
You'll be noone's
If you'll not be mine
Valentine
Oh my valentine
Pale as the sky
Over your face a veil of dew
Sinking like coins
All of the dreams I made for you
Cover the rise
Sleep like a child
Valentine
Valentine
Oh my valentine
Say goodbye
Oh my valentine
Lay a wild flower by the riverside
And say goodbye
Oh my valentine
The lyrics to Mt. Desolation's song "Valentine" depict a complex and melancholic expression of love and longing.
The opening lines, "Two lovers disturb the dust, Black water embraces us, Dried flowers and turpentine, Valentine," present a sense of desolation and decay. The image of two lovers disturbing the dust suggests a past relationship that has come to an end and now lies dormant. The mention of black water and dried flowers implies a sense of emotional darkness and a fading connection. The use of turpentine, a strong-smelling chemical, adds to the disillusionment and suggests an attempt to erase or mask the pain. "Valentine" here serves as a symbol of the love once shared.
The following lines, "Your beauty uprooted me, Crude hopeless desire in me, Thoughts churning in a sea of wine, Valentine," reveal the intense impact that the person addressed as "Valentine" had on the singer. The beauty of Valentine caused the singer to feel uprooted and overwhelmed with a crude and hopeless desire. The mention of thoughts churning in a sea of wine suggests a tumultuous state of mind, possibly fueled by alcohol, further emphasizing the emotional turmoil experienced.
The repetition of the chorus, "Valentine, Oh my valentine, Say goodbye, Oh my valentine," reinforces the theme of separation and bidding farewell. It highlights the bittersweet nature of love and the pain associated with letting go.
The third verse, "Pale as the sky, Over your face a veil of dew, Sinking like coins, All of the dreams I made for you, Cover the rise, Sleep like a child, Valentine," portrays a vivid image of loss and a fading hope. The reference to pale sky and a veil of dew creates a sense of delicacy and fragility. The sinking dreams and covering of the rise emphasize a sense of disappointment and unrealized expectations. The mention of sleeping like a child evokes a sense of innocence lost and a longing for simpler times.
The final lines, "Lay a wild flower by the riverside, And say goodbye, Oh my valentine," illustrate a final gesture of farewell. The act of laying a wild flower by the riverside symbolizes leaving behind a token of remembrance while acknowledging the need to say goodbye. It portrays a wistful desire to hold on to the memories and a recognition that the relationship has reached its end.
Overall, "Valentine" delves into the complexities of love, capturing both the beauty and pain that come with it. The lyrics explore themes of longing, separation, and the yearning for something that can no longer be.
