After the Storm
Mumford %26 Sons Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I run and run as the rains come
And I look up, I look up
On my knees and out of luck
I look up
Night has always pushed up day
You must know life to see decay
Not this mind and not this heart
I won't rot
And I took you by the hand
And we stood tall
And remembered our own land
What we lived for
But there will come a time, you'll see
With no more tears
And love will not break your heart
But dismiss your fears
Get over your hill and see
What you find there
With grace in your heart and flowers
In your hair
And now I cling to what I knew
I saw exactly what was true
But oh no more
That's why I hold
That's why I hold with all I have
That's why I hold
And I will die alone and be left there
Well I guess I'll just go home
Or God knows where
Because death is just so full and man so small
Well I'm scared of what's behind
And what's before
But there will come a time, you'll see
With no more tears
And love will not break your heart
But dismiss your fears
Get over your hill and see
What you find there
With grace in your heart and flowers
In your hair
And there will come a time, you'll see
With no more tears
And love will not break your heart
But dismiss your fears
Get over your hill and see
What you find there
With grace in your heart and flowers
In your hair
The song "After the Storm" by Mumford & Sons is about finding hope and strength after going through a difficult time or "storm". The first verse describes the aftermath of the storm, with the singer running as the rain falls, feeling helpless and desperate. However, despite being on his knees and out of luck, he looks up and finds comfort in the knowledge that night always yields to day, and that decay is a natural part of life. He vows not to let his mind and heart rot, and instead holds onto hope and strength.
The second verse is more hopeful, with the singer recalling a time when he stood tall with someone he loved, remembering the land they lived for. He acknowledges that there will come a time when love will not break his heart or bring tears, but instead will dismiss his fears. The chorus repeats the refrain to "get over your hill", to face the unknown and find what lies ahead with grace and beauty.
The final verse, however, takes a darker turn as the singer realizes that he will ultimately die alone and faces the fear of the unknown. Despite this, he still holds onto hope and remains unbroken, holding onto what he knows to be true. The song ends with a repeated refrain of "get over your hill", emphasizing the importance of moving forward in the face of adversity.
Overall, "After the Storm" is a song about finding hope and strength in difficult times, and facing the unknown with grace and courage.

And after the storm
After the hardships and challenges have passed
I run and run as the rains come
I scramble to avoid being swept away by the difficulties that follow
And I look up, I look up
I seek something beyond myself to guide me
On my knees and out of luck
Desperately praying for help and feeling helpless
I look up
Still searching for hope and faith
Night has always pushed up day
Difficult times will eventually make way for brighter days
You must know life to see decay
To understand the circle of life, decay and death are inevitable
But I won't rot, I won't rot
I won't let life's hardships break me down
Not this mind and not this heart
My spirit and will are strong enough to overcome any challenge
And I took you by the hand
I offered comfort and support to someone else
And we stood tall
Together we were strong and resilient
And remembered our own land
Together we remembered who we truly were and where we came from
What we lived for
We rediscovered our purpose and passion for life
But there will come a time, you'll see
One day, things will get better and easier
With no more tears
No more sadness or pain
And love will not break your heart
Love will not hurt or disappoint you
But dismiss your fears
Love will help you overcome your fears and insecurities
Get over your hill and see
Overcome the obstacles in front of you and gain a new perspective
What you find there
Discover what awaits you on the other side
With grace in your heart and flowers
With a pure and loving heart and a sense of beauty and wonder
In your hair
A joyful and carefree spirit
And now I cling to what I knew
I hold onto what I've learned and experienced
I saw exactly what was true
I gained clarity and understanding
But oh no more
But those moments are gone
That's why I hold
That's why I keep striving and fighting
That's why I hold with all I have
I hold onto hope and faith with all my might
And I will die alone and be left there
Death is a lonely and daunting prospect
Well I guess I'll just go home
Accepting fate and returning to the familiar
Or God knows where
Uncertainty and fear of the unknown
Because death is just so full and man so small
The concept of death is vast and overwhelming compared to human existence
Well I'm scared of what's behind
I'm afraid of what has already occurred
And what's before
And what is yet to come

Glad to see you still kicking... I've been there and still battle it on a daily basis. Keep your chin up otherwise you'll miss all the cool things life has to offer... find your thing and don't let anyone take it from you!

@@jaydpeckham7865 Thank you, my friend. Life isn't easy, I doubt it ever will be - if it were easy then what would be the point? - but I am functioning now. I take my joy where I can find it, try to improve things when I can, and generally keep living, one day after the next. There is beauty in this world, and if you're willing to see them they can make all the other bullshit feel worthwhile
