I will wait
Mumford %26 Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I came home
Like a stone
And I fell heavy into your arms
These days of dust
Which we've known
Will blow away with this new sun

But I'll kneel down
Wait for now
And I'll kneel down
Know my ground

And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

So break my step
And relent
Well, you forgave and I won't forget
Know what we've seen
And him with less
Now in some way
Shake the excess

'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

Now I'll be bold
As well as strong
And use my head alongside my heart
So tame my flesh
And fix my eyes
A tethered mind freed from the lies

And I'll kneel down
Wait for now
I'll kneel down
Know my ground

Raise my hands
Paint my spirit gold
And bow my head
Keep my heart slow

'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mumford & Sons' "I Will Wait" are a testament to the strength of enduring love. The singer of the song has returned home, coming back feeling worn out and heavy, as if carrying a heavy burden. However, they are met with loving arms that offer comfort and security in a world of uncertainty. The song acknowledges the ups and downs of relationships and life, the hardships that come along the way, and the vow to wait for one another and overcome any obstacle that may arise.

The chorus of the song repeats the line "And I will wait, I will wait for you" four times, emphasizing the determination and loyalty of the singer. The following line, "So break my step and relent," shows the willingness of the singer to adapt to change and release control in order to be with the one they love. These lines are a message that expresses how important someone can be to another person, and how they can strongly impact the choices they make in their lives.

The second verse is a declaration of the strength and resilience of the singer. It shows their determination to be better and to fight for their love, to learn from past situations and to use that knowledge to move forward. The line, "Raise my hands, paint my spirit gold" is a symbol of a purified soul, one that is untainted by life's struggles and that is ready to be truly present and devoted to another person.

Overall, the song speaks to the power of love, the commitment to waiting for someone, and the perseverance through life’s challenges. It's a reminder that love strengthens the heart and soul, even when things are tough.

When I listen to this song, my heart aches.
My Beloved Baby Brother died 1/4/2020.
He was a Soldier, a career Army man.
He died when he was only 47 years old.
Jamie was deployed 3 times.
Twice to Iraq and once, the last time, to Afghanistan.
He was a Combat Engineer who cleared explosives, IED'S, Landmines etc. Think the movie, "The Hurt Locker".
He was Awarded the Army Metal with Valor, multiple Purple Hearts, and many others.
When I heard this song, I thought of my brother.
After reading others comments, I see how other people relate to this song in so many different ways.
As for me, I thought about when my brother was deployed to Iraq for the first time.
He left behind his wife Anita, a Special Needs Teacher & their two little boys who were only 3 & 5 years old.
The 1st time he was Deployed, we weren't allowed to see him off.
So, the day he was deploy to Iraq, one of the soldiers came to his home & picked him up.
He, his wife and 2 little boys stood on the front porch and said their tearful goodbye's.
It was late October in New England, & it was cold outside.
Well after the truck had driven out of sight, Anita went to bring the boys inside.
Connor, who was 5yo went in the house.
Ryan who was only 3yo, wouldn't go in.
Anita knelt down to ask him why he didn't go inside.
With a serious, thoughtful expression in his big brown eyes and tear stained face.
He looked up at his Mom & said, "I'm going to stay right here and wait for Dad to come home."
Gently, Anita said, "Ryan, remember Dad talked about how he was going to be away with his Army Family for a while, then he'll come home?"
"We made the calender with Dad, to mark off the days till he comes home."
In his serious 3 year old "grown up voice", he said, "Yes, but I'm still going to stay right here and wait for Dad to come home."
"Dad will see me & he won't forget where we live!".
Talk about heartbreaking! Military Spouses don't get the recognition they deserve!!
Neither does the less than 1% of the eligible US population that serve in the Military!!
At night, I look up at the stars and I talk to my brother!
Sometimes I text him, or I'll call & sing him "Happy Birthday" or just to chat.
It's been 2 years now and Miraculously, even though the phone is not registered or hooked up, my texts and calls still go thru!!
I like to think my brother makes it happen!!
