Tompkins Square Park
Mumford %26 Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh babe, meet me in Tompkins Square Park
I wanna hold you in the dark
One last time
Just one last time

And oh babe, can you tell what's on my tongue?
Can you guess that I'll be gone?
With the twilight
With the twilight

But no flame burns forever, oh no
You and I both know this all too well
And most don't even last the night
No they don't, they say they don't

Oh babe, I've never been so lost
I wanna hear you lie
One last time
Just one last time

But oh babe, I really wish you would not cry
I only ever told you one lie
When it could have been a thousand
It might as well have been a thousand

But no flame burns forever, oh no
You and I both know this all too well
And most don't even last the night
No they don't, they say they don't

And we can talk it round again girl
Round and round, round and round again
Or we could leave it out to die
Leave it out just leave it out

I never tried to trick you babe
I just tried to work it out
But I was swallowed up by doubt
If only things were black and white
Cause I just want to hold you tight
Without holding back my mind
Without holding back my mind

But no flame burns forever, oh no

You and I both know this all too well
And most don't even last the night

Overall Meaning

The song "Tompkins Square Park" by Mumford & Sons seems to be about a couple's last encounter in the titular park before they part ways. The singer wants to hold the other person in the dark "one last time," but there is a sense of impending finality. The lyrics suggest that the relationship was not perfect, as the singer "only ever told you one lie/When it could have been a thousand/It might as well have been a thousand." They both know that no flame burns forever, and that most relationships don't last. The singer seems to be grappling with doubts and indecision, wishing things were more clear-cut and black and white.

The use of the phrase "one last time" is particularly poignant, as it suggests that there will be no more chances after this. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the idea that most relationships don't last and that this one is no exception. The imagery of Tompkins Square Park creates a sense of nostalgia and longing, as if the singer is trying to hold onto a memory. The line "I just want to hold you tight/Without holding back my mind" suggests that the singer has been holding back in some way, unable to fully give themselves to the other person.

Overall, the song captures the bittersweet nature of relationships and how hard it can be to let go.

I've noticed that in society, people love to follow the crowd, but I like when a band evolves, it shows their true talent. The fact they can transition from a banjo to a violin/electric guitar, and still be Mumford and Sons is fantastic.

As a longtime fan of Weird Al Yankovic, I can attest that hearing the same artist you love in multiple genres is not a bad thing.

I love how there’s a rock band hiding inside the banjos. I like some of their earlier stuff, but as a mainly rock music fan, the one where they really cut loose are my favorites. The Cave, The Delta, Believe, Little Lion Man, and The Wolf are just awesome.

I love this song so much that I went to Tompkins Square Park in NYC to find the inspiration behind this song. I was shocked. It was a basic park, not with much green or trees. I felt like I walked into a time machine and was in the 90s. It was darker and there were stones everywhere. Nothing like Central Park, beautiful and elegant. I wondered how this song could be based off of this park.

I just listened to this song for the millionth time last night and I realized the importance of the line “I want to hold you in the dark one last time.” He wants to be alone with her. He doesn’t want this to be crowded Central Park where he can’t actually be alone with her, surrounded by so many people. This song is about a sad goodbye, an intimate one however. And that would be perfect in Tompkins Square Park, a dark park.
