Unfortunately, this is one of the worse cases of selfishness. The Mom wasn't sad necessarily that the son was leaving. The Mom was sad because the son was leaving HER. The Mom's life didn't revolve around the son for the son's sake, it revolved around the son for her own sake.

She imagined, not the son's entire life, but her entire life compared to his. She imagined the love that she wanted from her own Husband's eyes, in the relationship that could blossom between her Son and his partner. You could see this in the way she watched the love sitcom and then turned to her husband, asleep on the chair. She didn't want her son, she wanted his life.

She suffered from one of the worse internal illness a human can have; Unthankfulness. Nostalgia in its negative form, imagines the "good life" of one's past life in comparison to their current, seemingly "dull" life. I say its one of the worse type of internal struggles because it almost completely abandons rationality.

When you cant look around and be thankful for all the gifts of life that you are given, you can only think you had it better "back when". What you fail to balance, is the good times of your past with the bad times. EVERYONE has had bad times in their past. While at the same time, EVERYONE will have bad times in their future. Thats life, yet, why don't we view it this way?

Be thankful for God's gift of life and the things you have. If not, you may crush even the most precious things in your life.

What I absolutely love about Ari Aster is how he scares you psychologically. How his movies and shorts use our complacency of normal and “happy” moments into realistic psychological nightmares. This short is a perfect depiction of how not just emotionally but also psychologically and physically impactful severe emotional incest can be. Brilliant work!!!

I love the fact that Aster's work has a constant of foreshadowing. The little figurine that the mother finds buried while gardening would seem like a foreshadow of the untimely death of her son. Just like it happens in a way or another in Hereditary and Midsommar.

Haha! -it is hard being a parent, especially being a mum to see your children leave home, BUT it is essential they do so. They have to fly free. IF they then want to return after college, or travelling, to save up a deposit on their own place , then most parents are happy to have their adult child back temporarily, But nothing sadder than a 50 yr old bloke living with his 80 yr old mum...having never left home.....it happens. Not healthy.

This happens alot more than people think. And I know it might seem like a joke to many of you, but it can get very extreme...and tragic in some unfortunate instances.

I've seen close friends' families tear apart at the seams simply because something as seemingly trivial as "mommy couldn't let go" spiraled out of control.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I implore families and those in similar situations to just...exercise some patience and understanding. It's a time of learning to cope, to adapt, to appreciate the changing circumstances.

I saw this film ages ago on the year it came out because I wanted to gain a bigger understanding of Munchausen Syndrome and Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.
Coming back to this now because I am so shocked to learn that this was by Ari Aster!
Who would've knew in 3 years time since this film was released that two successful and iconic horror films would come out, made by the exact same guy.

I especially liked the first half and how it showed the mothers predicament. I wasn't expecting the mother to poison her child though and it didn't resonate with me, even if it was kind of a "be careful what you wish for" thing. I would have been much more intrigued to see how you would show the mothers suffering affect her so much that she actually developed psychosomatic pain, but then again she did become sick in a different kind of sense, really sick.

Ari Aster has a scary understanding of the human brain. This is a beautiful portrayal of Munchausen by proxy syndrome. I will say the only issue is that she doesn't have Munchausen, she has Munchausen by proxy. Munchausen is when you make yourself sick to gain support/love/attention from others...Munchausen by proxy is usually when someone makes their child sick so the child can't move on in life out of fear of losing them or to sometimes get empathy/finical support from others. Gypsy Rose's mother had Munchausen by proxy

The juxtaposition of that scene in the end at the church and scene in the street in front of the house was pretty cool. Because she couldn't release her vice grip on him she ended up having to chase his coffin instead of chasing down his car which would one day come back to her. Her son in his coffin however, will now be forever out of her reach. Interesting short film. Loved the subversion of the Pixar atmosphere.

Dear moms, Never Ever put your son in a position of a lifetime companion, i.e. your man, your bestie. I've seen similar situations where moms treat their sons like their husband. Your goal is to get them ready for the world and then you let them fly off. If it were straight up Munchausen she would be poisoning herself. But in any case, the motivations for MBP are usually about gaining sympathy. Most people (usually being mothers or some other sort of caregiver) hurt their children to get attention and sympathy from family, friends, doctors, and other medical staff. They revel in the attention and sympathy they get for having a sick child. So they keep their child sick to keep up the attention, usually with fatal results. A recently publicized case of this is Lacey Spears. She was poisoning her son through a feeding tube for his entire, albeit short, life. It ended with her overdosing him with salt when he was at one of his many hospital visits. She chronicled all this ailments and doctor visits to very sympathetic people via her blog. It's really quite sick. These people are narcissitic psychopaths.

I remember watching a documentary about the woman. She put salt in his water and everything to the point that it like dehydrated his brain. I can't quite remember much else.

I can't believe i had to scroll this far down the comments before someone made this point. Although I find Vice entertaining sometimes its inaccuracy and generalizations are irritating. This should just be titled The Trouble with Mom. The Munchausen no doubt brings more views.

This may be a stretch, but with this film, the flowers seen throughout could represent the actions that take place. Flowers are a beautiful sight to humans, so selfishly, we pick them for ourselves. But by doing this, we knowingly damage the flower, ending its life
