Give 'em Hell
My Chemical Romance Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I took a train outta New Orleans and they shot me full of ephedrine
This is how we like to do it in the murder scene
Can we settle up the score?
If you were here,
I'd never have a fear
So go on live your life
(You're beautiful)
Well I'm a total wreck and almost every day
Like the firing squad or the mess you made
Well don't I look pretty walking down the street
In the best damn dress I own?
If you were here,
I'd never have a fear
So go on live your life
But I miss you more than I did yesterday
You're so far away
So c'mon show me how
'Cause I mean this more than words can ever say
We are, made from the sharpest things you'd say
We are young and we don't care
Your dreams and your hopeless hair
We never wanted it to be this way
For all our lives
Do you care at all?
If you were here,
I'd never have a fear
So go on live your life
But I miss you more than I did yesterday
You're so far away
So c'mon show me how
'Cause I mean this more than words can ever say
(What'd you call me?)
(Well, there's no way I'm kissing that guy)
The lyrics to "Give 'Em Hell, Kid" by My Chemical Romance explore themes of love, loss, and rebellion. The song opens with the line "Oh baby here comes the sound" which sets the tone for the aggressive and raw emotions that follow. The singer sings about leaving New Orleans on a train and being given ephedrine, a stimulant drug, which reflects the reckless and wild behavior of the murder scene he's a part of. The line "Can we settle up the score?" suggests that there is conflict in this scene, and the singer is ready to take action and confront it.
The chorus of the song expresses the longing the singer feels for someone who is no longer with him. He admits that he is a "total wreck" and misses this person more with each passing day. He describes how he wishes this person were still here with him, as he would feel less fearful and alone. The line "You're beautiful" suggests that this person meant a lot to him and he views them as something special.
The second verse of the song continues with the same theme as the first. The singer describes how they look "pretty walking down the street" and how they are still held back by the mess the other person made. The bridge of the song captures the youthful rebellion that My Chemical Romance was known for with lyrics like "We are young and we don't care." The final lines of the song bring the focus back to the person the singer is missing, and the desire for them to return and show him how much they mean to him.
