The band eclipsed their previous success with their 2006 concept album, The Black Parade, which gained generally favorable reviews among music critics. Their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, was released on November 22, 2010, to positive reviews. The band's final release in their original run were a series of singles, released over the course of five months, collected on the compilation Conventional Weapons. The band announced its break-up on March 22, 2013, one month after the final release in the Conventional Weapons series. On March 25, 2014, the band released May Death Never Stop You: The Greatest Hits (2001–2013), a greatest hits album containing material spanning their entire career, as well as some previously unreleased material.
On Halloween of 2019, the band announced a comeback show in Los Angeles, California, and fans speculated that there was more to it than just a show. On November 5, three more shows were confirmed in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. On January 29, 2020, eighteen additional dates were announced in North America.
On May 12, 2022, the band released The Foundations Of Decay, solidifying their return as a band.
We Don't Need Another Song About California
My Chemical Romance Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Dedication, to the places that you never need to hide
Occupations, the opportunity to see yourself in lights
And all the city fires
And the tabloid lies
And the television guys
For the missions and the boulevards
Stop and stare
At the accidents and stars that bore you
We don't dare, sing another song for, California
Anywhere
Where the city lights are hopeless for you
We don't care, I need another song for, California
Shut up and give me a shot
On occasion, to the places that you never want to die
On the station, everybody hears but no one needs to try
On the telephone, on the methane dare
Every minute that you scream
For the errant scars and the dying stars
Every second that you take to fake your life
Stop and stare
At the accidents and stars that bore you
We don't dare, sing another song for, California
Anywhere
Where the city lights are hopeless for you
We don't care, I need another song for, California
Stop and stare
At the accidents and stars that bore you
We don't dare, sing another song for, California
Anywhere
Where the city lights are hopeless for you
We don't care, I need another song for, California
In "We Don't Need Another Song About California," My Chemical Romance seems to criticize the glamour of California and the media's obsession with it. The song's title alone reveals the band's exhaustion with the popular notion that California is the land of dreams and hope, portrayed by the media and popular culture. The lyrics are an anthem for those who are dissatisfied and disappointed with the superficial and materialistic nature of the Californian lifestyle.
The song points out the negative aspects of California too, such as the "city fires," "tabloid lies," and "television guys." It gives us a glimpse of the darker side of California that is sometimes ignored by the media. The lyrics urge us to "stop and stare" at the accidents and stars that bore us and to realize that we don't need another song about California to understand our lives.
Throughout the song, the band uses rhetorical devices like repetition, alliteration, and contrast to emphasize the message about the disillusionment and dissatisfaction with the Californian lifestyle. Ultimately, the song emphasizes the notion that everything that glitters is not gold, and that money and fame won't guarantee happiness.
