Lady Bird
Nancy Sinatra Featuring Lee Hazlewood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He's never caught one spy untold
He's never even caught a cold
Got his degree from Disney Land
But he's the last of the secret agents
And he's my man

He's an underwhelming kind of sleuth
He thinks James Bond is some kind of suit
He's farther back than also ran
But he's the last of the secret agents
And he's my man

He'd come in third in a two-horse race
I've never had to slap his face
(What a shame)
But people try to understand
He's the last of the secret agents
And he's my man

He's the last of the secret agents
And he's my man

He's the last of the secret agents
And he's my man

Overall Meaning

At first listen, Lady Bird seems to be Nancy Sinatra's tribute to her man who is affectionately described in the song as the last of the secret agents. The lyrics seem to be suggesting that this man, who is never catchin g a spy or winning a horse race, is still someone to love and cherish because of his unique qualities, and because she finds him to be her kind of man. She sings that while he is an underwhelming kind of sleuth, he isn't her James Bond, but he is still her man. Sinatra's lyrics have a touch of humor, with lines like "he got his degree from Disneyland," and yet still manage to convey a deep caring for the man she calls her own.

Even though the song seems to be a tribute to her lover, the lyrics also seem to be poking fun at the image of the "secret agent man" perpetuated by the James Bond movies which were popular at the time the song was released. Nancy refers to her man as the "last" of the secret agents, which creates the idea that the era of the spy guy has passed. The mention of the man being farther back than also-rans, and coming in third in a two-horse race, are clearly references to someone who is not quite good enough, but again, the affectionate undercurrent suggests that the singer is okay with that because she has made this man the subject of her love.

I've been where the eagles flies
Rode his wings across autumn skies
Kissed the sun touched the moon
But he left me much too soon
His ladybird
He left his ladybird

Ladybird come on down
I'm here waitin' on the ground
Ladybird I'll treat you good
Ladybird I wish you would
You ladybird
Pretty ladybird

Lightning flashed across the sky
The night he taught me how to fly
The sun came up and down I found
Too soon he left his lady down
His ladybird
I'm his ladybird

Ladybird come on down
I'm here waitin' on the ground
Ladybird I'll treat you good
Ladybird I wish you would
You ladybird
Pretty ladybird

Winter lives in my heart
In the times we're apart
Summer sings a song or two
When he says: "I love you true"
My ladybird yeah
I'm his ladybird

Ladybird come on down
I'm here waitin' on the ground
Ladybird I'll treat you good
Ladybird I wish you would
You ladybird
Pretty ladybird

You're too much
You little bird.

It was a cold day in France, my friend died at 20 years old.
It was a small village near Annecy, a month ago, the last time I saw him, he put this music on his phone.
The day we made the funeral was a stormy and windy day. His mother put this music in the silent village, and we cried for him. I can't describe in english this feeling, neither in french.
I love you G.
