This Town
Nashville Cast Clare Bowen and Charles Esten Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hold on until the feelin' is so strong
Until the ground that you walk on
Is where you stand.
This dream, it heals and it haunts me
It's tempted and taught me who I am

This town ain't yours
And this town ain't mine.
We all come here with a light in our eyes
Some will burn out.
Some will burn bright.
Some learn to fly.
Some will run for their lives.
In this town.
In this town.

Strangers, we're nothin' but strangers
Putting our hearts in danger
For the song we sing.
I've seen the devil inside me
But I won't let him guide me
Or take my wings

This town ain't yours
And this town ain't mine.
We all come here with a light in our eyes
Some will burn out. (Some will burn out.)
Some will burn bright. (Some will burn bright.)
Some learn to fly.
Some will run for their lives.
In this town
In this town

This town ain't yours. (This town ain't yours.)
And it surely ain't mine. (This town ain't mine.)
We all come here with a light in our eyes
Some will burn out.
Some will burn bright.
Some learn to fly.
Some will run for their lives.
In this town
In this town (This town.)
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

(Ooh this town.)
In this town.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, 'Hold on until the feeling is so strong, until the ground that you walk on is where you stand' suggests that one should hold on until they feel a strong connection with the place they are in. The subsequent lines reveal that the subject is dreaming of something that both heals and haunts them at the same time. While this dream has tempted and taught them who they are, it's something they are still grappling with. The verse talks about how the dream has tied them to this town, and how they see themselves in it.

The chorus, 'This town ain't yours, and this town ain't mine. We all come here with a light in our eyes. Some will burn out, some will burn bright, some learn to fly, some will run for their lives' suggests diversity in the ways people see this town. This town is a shared space for all of them, but each individual's perception of it is unique. The last line of the chorus, 'In this town' unites them all, despite their differences.

The second verse talks about how everyone in this town is a stranger, but the song they sing puts their hearts in danger. The subject confronts the devil inside them, but they refuse to let it guide them or take away their wings (which symbolically represents their freedom). The chorus is repeated, emphasizing that the town belongs to no one and that each person's experience in it is different. The song ends on a lingering note that leaves the listener to reflect on the nature of the town and the people in it.

Still miss the show

@iardritorrance

These two have chemistry with anyoneย  they sing or act with but togetherย  they are sheer magic.ย ย  They should really let them do more songs together for the show.

@vuduck1

they both know how to play quite well off others. chip's duets w/ clare and his on screen daughter (can't remember her name- maisley or is that her sister)ย  are very good. but clare's chemistry w/ sam and now sam and jonathan has created the bestย  songs from the show. and it's not even close. i'm not sure i'd watch the show w/o scarlett' singing. and more than likely not be watching w/o her at all. can't wait for the release of clare's album sometime this year.

I've known a few people who've gone to Nashville with dreams and big talent... and I'll just say, this song sure sounds like an ode to how that goes.
