They Can't Take That Away From Me
Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our romance won't end on a sorrowful note,
Though by tomorrow you're gone;
The song is ended, but as the songwriter wrote,
The melody lingers on.
They may take you from me, I'll miss your fond caress.
But though they take you from me, I'll still possess.

The way you wear your hat
The way your sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, no, they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No, no, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On the bumpy road to love
Still, I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No, no, they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away from me

Can't take that away
Can't take that away from me

Overall Meaning

In "They Can't Take That Away From Me," Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole sing about a love that won't be forgotten even though the person they love is leaving. The first verse talks about the idea of the melody lingering on, a nod to the power of music to help us retain memories. The second verse lists specific things about the person they love that they will hold onto, like "the way you wear your hat" or "the way you sip your tea." They also add that they'll keep the memory of the way that person changed their life.

The chorus reinforces the idea that no matter what happens, no one can take these memories away. The final verse acknowledges that the couple may never meet again, but they will always have these memories to cling to. Overall, the song conveys a sense of nostalgia and the bittersweet feeling of losing someone you love, but still being able to cherish the memories you shared.

The classic of all classics! What would the world have lost if it wasn't for the Gershwin brothers.

Did you know that Frank Sinatra was friends with Natalie Cole's father, Nat King Cole ?

triplejazz musicisall

Yes. I might be alone here but I have always loved the duet version of Frank and Natalie singing this classic. It swings and their voices compliment each other.
The best song on those duets albums IMO.
