The group formed in East Orange, New Jersey, and first appeared on the music scene in the late 1980's releasing an album titled The Independent Leaders, under their then name The New Style. The album generated the minor hit "Scuffin' Those Knees". After the release of their first album, the group was subsequently mentored by fellow New Jersey native Queen Latifah and consequently changed their name.
Their first hit as Naughty By Nature was a track titled "O.P.P." ("Other People's Parts"), which sampled the The Jackson 5's hit "ABC" and was released in 1991 on their self-titled debut album. The album also generated another hit titled "Ghetto Bastard" (the track is often referred to as "Everything's Gonna Be Alright"). Fellow New Jersey native Tony D, accused Naughty by Nature of stealing a sample from his breakbeat album Music Makes You Move and using it on their track "O.P.P.". The matter was settled out of court. Later they had multiple hits from their third and fourth albums, titled 19 Naughty III and Poverty's Paradise respectively.
"Hip Hop Hooray" was a success from the album 19 Naughty III. Its video was directed by Spike Lee and featured other hip-hop artists popular in the early 1990's, including Queen Latifah, Eazy-E, and Kris Kross.
The group also scored a major hit with the track "Uptown Anthem", from the soundtrack to the 2Pac movie Juice.
In later years, Naughty by Nature started their own music imprint, Illtown Records, and released an album from their proteges the Rottin Razkals. The group (mainly Kaygee) worked closely with a number of rnb groups over the years particularly Zhané and Next.
An ongoing dispute between Kaygee and Treach saw Kaygee leave Naughty by Nature in late 2000 to concentrate on his Divine Mill label. The remainder of the group released an album in 2002 titled IIcons, using a variety of different producers including Da Beatminerz - the album however received a lukewarm reception from the public. Treach is rumoured to be releasing a solo album soon. Kaygee has been extremely successful building his Divine Mill imprint with 2 platinum plus albums on both (Divine Mill acts) Jaheim and Next as well as songs on albums from Syleena Johnson and Charlie Wilson among others. In May 2006 Kay Gee reunited with Treach and Naughty by Nature at a concert at B.B. King's nightclub. They will be working together on their next album.

It's texture pure terror a street professor aggressor scale and measure
Clever compressor stretching salary stacks be running blocks as a factory
Structure capture the raw product I manufacture, fracture critic chatter
Nigga catcher as I blast a cop matter capsule shatter scatter midnight
Disasters clips I rather gather then flip for what I'm after now and
Forever money makes things better at a regular gets me jewelry, bitches,
Bankcards, cars and competitors proposed threats wreck necks and puff ya
Booda Bop, Boom, Bam, Bink, Bick Bow Bookow, Ratatat, Klack Klick, Klick
Kow, Klick Kow put brains with muscle.
Hear a crew of guys utilize they skills.
Bang out hang out slang out work and hustle.
Flip techniquesover boogie bangin' beats. A street fleet with Moet, dank and freaks in
Twenty separate suite I'm servin' dope lyrics holding weight, just like
Chris Webber a warrior from Golden State, and I conjure up raps I bet you
Don't know any they be hitting like that brick that smacked Reginald Denny.
Collects cash n' checks on a jet to meet the next client as I arrive at
L.A.X.
I'm up early so I catch my phlegm spit step then stash the stem 10 clips
In ten shit bottles are sectioned in wit a clip thick a block stocked wit
Protection see X again tools ta fry and unified like Mexicans but if shit
Is slow in comin' a fiend that's one thing that's when you see twenty niggas running to one fiend.
Yo black tops I got that yellow high for hours buy from me now or next
Time I swear I'll sell you flour I got dreams of getting a 98 or a Caddy
Living fatty plus I got a little man calling me daddy my lady and little
Man they need me and I need 'em I gotta see em and please 'em but first of
All clothe & feed 'em so we can see freedom even if I jeopardize my time
And life while I'm in this game I'm making sure that mine is right from
The beginning to the end its dividend to the end so I like to hang out and hustle wit my friends.
Well it's Friday night and the weekend's here.
All that partying shit must take a seat to the rear.
Instead of fuckin' wit those phony ghetto chicks I'd rather be movin' my
Clips with my homies on the bricks my fingers stay hard. My hands stay
Full of ash. My fingenails stay dirty that's from burying my stash.
Fiends are bummin', money's comin' to say the least, but I'm out there
Flippin' clips feeding the belly of the beast. It's first of the month
Money's comin all day all night and too many going for theirs I'm cuttin'
Sales off with my bike.
Now with my niggaz in session we freestyle rhyme.
Reminiscing moving that shit 20's of clips at a time.

The first verse highlights his dominance on the streets with his street smarts and talent for manufacturing and distributing drugs. He is also aware of the risks and potential dangers that come with his lifestyle, hence he takes precautions and arms himself with weapons. The second verse portrays his daily routine, which involves dealing drugs, making money, providing for his family, and hanging out with his friends while engaging in freestyle rap battles.
The chorus emphasizes how the drug dealer chooses his job over partying and superficial pleasures. He values the relationships he has with his close friends, who share a similar lifestyle, over other temporary distractions. The lyrics also highlight the importance of making money to have a better quality of life, although the means to that end may be dangerous and illegal.
Overall, Hang Out and Hustle captures the life of a drug dealer and the challenges he faces daily. The song showcases nuanced observations about the culture of street life, the relationships formed among those who engage in it and the perceived need for survival.
