Dog Days Are Over
Naya Rivera and Amber Riley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming so you better run

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters, and brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind you
Can't carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had
And what was left after that too, oh

Run fast for your mother, and fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and your brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind
Can't carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

(The dog days are over

The dog days are gone)
Here they come

Overall Meaning

The song "Dog Days Are Over" is a powerful anthem that speaks about a person's struggle to leave behind their fears, doubts and worries and embrace happiness. The main protagonist of the song has experienced happiness that has taken her by surprise and has swept her off her feet, like a train on a track. Despite the initial shock, she knows that she has to embrace this newfound joy and let go of her past.

The chorus of the song "The dog days are over, the dog days are done" is a metaphorical representation of the fact that the hard times are over and that happiness is on its way. The arrival of horses is another symbolic reference to the change that is coming. It could be interpreted as the arrival of good fortune or simply the fresh start that the singer is seeking.

The lyrics talk about the need to leave behind everything that had previously held the singer back. She exhorts her listeners to run fast for their mothers, fathers, children, sisters, and brothers, and leave all their love and their loving behind them. The song is a reminder that one can’t carry emotional baggage on their journey towards happiness.

I love Glee

Snatchedness Prevails

@McKenzy Casey i love/hate the show bc they did really good storylines with great performances (some really hit and stuck with me), but then there are those throwaway ones where they ruined certain characters and they could have taken better directions. Most of the time, the character motives weren't even strong enough for me, as an audience, to make sense of the show's different aspects. I can forgive them for making errors in terms of continuity and incoherence (like the whole plot of season 5), but when they made little effort to build a character's foundation and drive to do the things they did, it drives me nuts thinking about the terrible writing in particular parts of the show. I know it's only a series, but it's one of my only escape from reality, and I do not like the fact that it still baffles me all the time especially with the dichotomy between being satiric and dignified.
