Folia De Reis
Nelio Guerson and Carlos Guerson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eu era assim desses homens
Que tem uma casa um rede e um quintal
Criado na beira da estrada
Onde eu galopava com meu animal

Assim como muitos no campo
Ja fui violeiro ja fui cantador
Cantava no coro da Igreja
Omde eu ia tambem aprender as licoes do Senhor

E em todo Santo Janeiro
Com frases da Biblia que eu mesmo rimei
Descia as casas cantando as cancoes de Folia de Reis

( Solo )

Porem dentro do pensamento
Largar tudo isso no sonho eu trazia
E hoje e o escuro das ruas
Os becos de lixo, minha moradia

Amigo daqueles que roubam
Estou sempre em fuga sempre correndo
Meu rosto esta sempre entre as maos
Ora escondendoo pranto, ora me escondendo

Agora de nada adianta
Lembrar do meu mestre ou de suas licoes
So resta a ironia de tambem poder morrer entre ladroes

( Solo )

Porem dentro do pensamento
Largar tudo isso no sonho eu trazia
E hoje e o escuro das ruas
Os becos de lixo, minha moradia

Amigo daqueles que roubam
Estou sempre em fuga sempre correndo
Meu rosto esta sempre entre as maos
Ora escondendoo pranto, ora me escondendo

E eu que ja fui violeiro
Esqueci as cantigas que um dia cantei
Nao tendo sequer a viola pra tocar
A Folia de Reis
( Solo)

Oi la pro lado do Oriente
Uma estrela apareceu ai ai
Aos tres magos anunciando

Que o Messias ja nasceu ai ai
( Solo)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nelio Guerson and Carlos Guerson's song Folia De Reis tell the story of a man who was raised in the countryside, with a home, a hammock, and a backyard where he used to ride his animal. He was once a violeiro and a cantador, singing in the church choir where he also learned the Lord's lessons. Every January, he would sing the songs of Folia de Reis, using phrases from the Bible that he had rhymed himself, as he went down the houses.

However, despite his humble origins and his love for music and the Lord's teachings, the man found himself homeless, wandering through dark streets and alleys, always on the run, always hiding his face, sometimes hiding his tears. He had become an accomplice of thieves, with nothing left but bitter irony as he faced the possibility of dying among them.

The song reflects the poignant contrast between the man's past and present, his dreams and his reality, his faith and his despair. It speaks of the fragility of human life, of the harshness of poverty, of the consequences of bad choices. Yet, it also carries the echo of the hope and beauty of Folia de Reis, the celebration of the Magos and the Messias, the light that still shines in the darkness.
