Witchcraft
Nelson Riddle Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Those fingers in my hair
That sly come hither stare
That strips my conscience bare
It's witchcraft

And I've got no defense for it
The heat is too intense for it
What good would common sense for it do

'Cause it's witchcraft, wicked witchcraft
And although, I know, it's strictly taboo

When you arouse the need in me
My heart says yes indeed in me
Proceed with what your leading me to

It's such an ancient pitch
But one I wouldn't switch
'Cause there's no nicer witch than you

'Cause it's witchcraft, that crazy witchcraft
And although, I know, it's strictly taboo

When you arouse the need in me
My heart says yes indeed in me
Proceed with what your leading me to

It's such an ancient pitch

But one that I'd never switch
'Cause there's no nicer witch than you

Overall Meaning

The iconic song "Witchcraft" by Frank Sinatra composed by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh is known for its swing style and its use of supernatural imagery to convey the feeling of falling in love. The song is a playful take on the addictive effects of love, which are often referred to as "witchcraft," with the lyrics using the metaphor of a spellbinding enchantress to describe the hold that the person has on the singer.

The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the powerful allure of a woman and her ability to intoxicate the singer with her charms. The sly come-hither stare, the fingers running through the singer's hair, and the feeling of being completely helpless in her thrall all contribute to the sense of enchantment that the singer feels. The singer has no defense against the intensity of the attraction, and even common sense seems useless in the face of it all. The chorus repeats this theme, recognizing the taboo nature of this kind of attraction, calling it "wicked" and "crazy," but nonetheless acknowledging its power.

The song's lyrics, set to a swinging jazz rhythm, capture the essence of the seductive power of love, despite its often dangerous and unpredictable nature. The lyrics were written by Carolyn Leigh, who was known for her clever, pun-filled lyrics and talent for capturing the playful side of love. Her lyrics are perfectly matched by Coleman's jazz-infused melody, which creates an irresistible energy that perfectly captures the singer's sense of falling hopelessly in love.

+Frank Devito Nelson with Frank were an amazing pairing. Listening to what they recorded back in the late 50s early 60s it's like WOW what a sound! So cool to see someone post with memories from that time.

Wow thanks for your response and please don't take my remark as uncomplimentary to yourself. I would give my eye teeth to have been good enough to play guitar on any of the stuff you did. I'm just particularly impressed with that track -  it had everything even though my experience is rock and roll.
