1) THE GOTH ONE!)
New Breed first saw the light of day in early 1998, when Kristian Gundersen (vocals and guitar) and Hans Henrik Varland (synth and programming) joined forces to establish what was to become one of the greats among the goth’n’roll acts. Two EP’s were released this year, the second one entitled “Shadows” was produced by Tommy Olsson (Elusive, Theatre Of Tragedy…). A year of gigs, mayhem and minor scandals followed, and in 2000 they picked up a spot at “Sex.Goth.Electronics”, a collection of fine Norwegian underground music. This year also saw the arrival of Bjarte Langeland into the band, who started off as a bass player, but later picked up the guitar. A couple of years of song writing, rehearsals, the occasional gig, fights and the leaving of Hans Henrik followed, and in 2003 “Pleasure and pain” was released, an album which features the backing vocals of Harald Hovtun (Trains, Reflection). While hugely acclaimed by the critics, the album didn’t do as well as one should hope for, so after a few more years of touring, busts and controversy, the band decides to slow down a bit, and spend some time and energy elsewhere. Kristian joined Elusive, and Bjarte spent some time with garage rockers Midtskillewillie before joining The River Knows. Still, there was always a connection, songs were made and rehearsals took place, so when Gothic Music Records entered the field and wanted to re-release “Pleasure and Pain”, the spark was lit. The old New Breed inspiration is back, new line up-plans are being made and the band is ready to take on the world harder than ever in the future.

we're confused, scared and tempted, seconds away to giving up
we've come so far yet achieved so little in time
our ignorance and selfish desires puts us where we are
(pre-)
shades of gray slowly changing colors
we choose our fate and write our story telling endings
but don't think that this will be easy
i want to see beyond these doors
i want a reason, it's getting addictive
this penetration here for more
we're here for more
captivity and so much more
is what we need we're getting addicted
leaving fate behind as we all glide through the night
we're confused, scared and tempted, another step
closer to giving up
raise your fist
and raise it high
fight the urge, in control
stay in control
(pre-)
let's bring our senses reach conclusions
we choose our fate and write our story telling endings
we know that it won't be so easy
it will all be worth it
i want to see beyond these doors
i want a reason, it's getting addictive
this penetration here for more
we're here for more
captivity and so much more
is what we need we're getting addicted
and we feast on it's the consequence, from the passion
from the passion we burn
the passion we burn
let's reach out beyond
i want to see beyond these doors
i want a reason, it's getting addictive
this penetration here for more
we're here for more
captivity and so much more
is what we need we're getting addicted
we're losing control
The lyrics of New Breed's song "Addiction" are open to interpretation, but one possible meaning is about the struggle of staying in control and choosing one's fate despite the allure of temptation and the fear of the unknown. The opening lines suggest that friction or conflict brings some order to the characters' night, perhaps implying that they are seeking some kind of direction or purpose. The next lines reveal that they are confused, scared, and tempted, and that they feel close to giving up despite having come so far yet achieving so little in time. The repetition of this stanza emphasizes their sense of despair and the contrast between their apparent progress and the results of their ignorance and selfish desires.
The pre-chorus shifts the tone slightly by suggesting that there are shades of gray to their situation, and that they have some agency in choosing their fate and writing their story with different endings. However, the singer acknowledges that this won't be easy, and asks for confirmation that it will be worth it in the end. The chorus returns with a repeated desire to see beyond these doors and find a reason for the addictive penetration they are experiencing. The words "captivity" and "so much more" suggest that there is a deeper longing or need that they are trying to fulfill through their addiction, and that they are losing control over their desires and actions.
The second verse is a variation of the first, with a call to raise one's fist and stay in control despite the confusion, fear, and temptation. The pre-chorus repeats the idea of bringing one's senses and reaching conclusions, and adds the hope that it will all be worth it in the end. The chorus returns with the same focus on going beyond the doors and finding a reason for the addictive passion they are burning with. The final lines suggest that there are consequences to their feast, but it's not clear what they are or whether they are positive or negative. The repetition of "we're getting addicted" at the end reinforces the theme of losing control and succumbing to a powerful force.
Overall, "Addiction" can be seen as a commentary on the human condition of seeking pleasure, purpose, and fulfillment, and struggling with the consequences and responsibilities of those pursuits. It may also reflect on the temptations and risks of addiction to substances or behaviors that offer temporary relief or excitement but can lead to negative consequences in the long term.
