Everything's Gone Green
New Order Lyrics

I wonder where I am
I see my future before me
I'll hurt you when I can
It seems like I've been here before
It seems like I've been here before
It seems like I've been here before
Confusion sprung up from devotion
A halo that covers my eyes
It sprung from this first estrangement
No one have I ever despised
Is this the way that you wanted to pay
Won't you show me, please show me the way
Is this the way that you wanted to pay
Won't you show me, please show me the way
Show me, show me, show me, show me, show me
New Order's song Everything has been interpreted by different people in different ways, but it is widely accepted that the song is about love, specifically, the kind of love that is fraught with confusion, doubt, and pain. This is evident in the first verse, where the singer asks for help and wonders where he is. He sees his future before him and knows that he will hurt the person he loves when he can. This suggests that the singer is struggling with his feelings and is not sure what to do about them.
The second verse adds another layer to the confusion. The singer talks about how his confusion has sprung up from devotion, suggesting that he loves someone deeply, but this love has caused him to be confused and uncertain. The phrase "a halo that covers my eyes" suggests that the singer is blinded by his love and cannot see the situation clearly. The last two lines of the verse are particularly interesting. The singer says that he has never despised anyone, which suggests that he is a kind and loving person. However, he is now in a situation where he cannot help hurting the person he loves.
As for the chorus, it seems to be a plea for help. The singer is asking for guidance, for someone to show him the way out of the confusion and pain he is feeling. The repetition of "show me" emphasizes the singer's desperation and his need for help.

My gateway into New Order proper, though I had had always liked Blue Monday , True Faith and Regret before then.
