I only have some German style cross peen hammers I inherited from my grandfather that would be of interest. My "framing hammer" is more a gag than a tool. It has a bottle opener instead of a nail puller. I guess that says it all.

@Dwain Bird Yep. Just got a woodburner installed. Dumbarse installer plopped a flashing down around the flue with silicone on top of the corrugated iron. So the leading edge of his 'flashing' didn't lap under anything- only as good as the silicone. Could've run a tray flashing up to the ridge, only 400mm away. Couldn't get any sense out of him as council okayed it. Roofer fixed properly. Then, elsewhere on same house, same roofer goes goes and puts an apron flashing upstand on the outside of the weatherboard, sealed with silicone again, rather than sliding under the lap of the weatherboard above. Do it myself next time.

Interesting, in the US we avoid putting treated lumber indoors unless absolutely necessary. Basement bottom plates, mudsill a, some lower exterior plywood sheathing, etc. Might depend on what you guys are treating it with.

My wife bought me a Deluge hammer, and while it was a beautiful tool, I hated it. Not only are wood handles slippery when sweating (realistically who wears work gloves), but the handle broke after only a few months! Broke! Hickory! Don’t ask me how, but how do you think I felt having a broken $120 hammer that was given to you by your wife? Shit. I love my Home Depot Milwaukee hammer same style as the one on this video. Very grippy, a lot of WHACK, and it was only $25! Scared to buy another big money hammer. Anyway, my experience with the Deluge. Hope this helps.

I swung a 14 oz titanium head, wood handled Stiletto for 8 years and just switched to the Tibone 3 because I was tired of replacing the handles. The Tibone has been amazing so far and In my opinion it is the best framing hammer. The only draw back that I can see is that you will either have to replace the whole hammer or make your own replacement handle once it wears out.

I use the M1 everyday at work and it’s the best hammer I’ve ever owned. Yeah it’s expensive, but the first year of my apprenticeship I went through 3 wooden hammers. The handles kept getting loose or cracked (since I work in concrete, I’m using it to hit hard surfaces such as steel or the actual concrete itself ). So to me it’s already payed for itself time and time again. Also, all the weight being in the head is an advantage. It hits like a 21 oz or something because nails don’t even stand a chance lol. The Stiletto TiBone is way too light in my opinion and the lack of customization is a draw back for basically being the same price. But to each his own 🤷🏽‍♂️

I am a Chinese, here most carpenters use curve head hammer, instead of straight-head. I compared these two types of hammer. My opinion is that the curve head one will make miss-aiming much more often, due to its shape. Because the barycenter of the head is not at the geometric center, but our eye aims the target aligning to the geometric center. So, now I use straight-head one and explain to my friend why should we use straight head one. And it was your video 1 year ago gave me a hint to think it over and practice it.

I switched from curved claw to straight claw hammer about 15-20 years ago (stiletto with titanium handle and claw. Seems similar to T bone). Still delight in using it. But agree with Scott it has the curve on end of handle that can get hooked up when removing from holder.

What I love about metal handled hammers: you can use the claw to pry sideways (like insert the claw and instead of pulling back, roll to the side, much better leverage) without breaking the handle. I have a Stiletto Mini-14, it's nice for that but too light. I generally use an Estwing 15oz metal handle, not the old school one but a newer design with a side nail puller. It makes me happy.

Hello! so this is the first time I've seen a vid of yours and it was great! one thing I did notice at the end is the "thumb grip" I learned early on as a blacksmith that there is a nerve that runs from your thumb all the way up to your shoulder and neck. using a hammer with vibration resistant material will help, but using your thumb on the back of your hammer like that can cause nerve damage over time.

So I’ve had a m1 for 3 years now, I love the thing, the straight handle is definitely the way to go, I had the axe handle at first (like yours), and it definitely catches on the hammer loop more, and just doesn’t feel quite as nice on the hammer as the straight handle does.
Also it’s like $50 bucks for the m4 head, and I think you’d really love your hammer with a m4 head on it, it’s next level for balance and finesse.

I've had the stiletto for 10 years. It's fantastic and has barely worn through years of abuse.

Sometimes though I LIKE a heavier hammer. You need to swing the Stilleto faster to get the same result. A heavier hammer like an Estwing can have more control in certain situations because you swing it slower and get that dead blow impact.

An old framer taught me to keep my thumb off the back of the handle and it has fixed any issues I had from swinging a hammer. It was hard to break the habit and keep control, but after a while, it took. Great channel!

Thanks for explaining the "pink" timber", what we call wood in the US. Many places we have CCA lumber that is greenish in color as the result of being treated...so it figures. Love your channel and look forward to more construction or demolition from New Zealand.

I just found your channel today and have watched a few and am enjoying them. Ok I know its really easy to pick apart someone's hard work in making a video, but...I have to say both you and especially Rich are holding the hammer with your thumb pointing down the shaft and not wrapped round it with your fingers. I think this is where you get tendon issues and you also tend to grip tighter and put more effort into each blow instead of a lose grip with the weight of the hammer doing the work. I see so many people going for heavy hammers because they don't know how to use the weight of a regular 20oz and then end up with tendon issues.

Honestly I think the M-1 was tweaked for production framers, so yeah the optimum balance and blow would be for working below your waist rolling joists framing walls etc.

Great Video! Now I wanna weld a side puller on my Estwing and maybe grind the top flat...and add a nail setter. Vaughn makes a good hammer too, Though I like a durable all metal handle as I do a lot of remodels as well as new construction, wood tends to crack in extremes and with age. It sounds like that company might do well to mix their M1 and M4 to make a perfect hammer, or sell it as a kit, kinda like the one with the removable heads did, Though I have never had use for a waffle hammer. If I ever have one given to me it goes straight to the grinder for a polish. I am skinny too, accidentally bought a head heavy hammer once, don't remember the brand, sucker wore me out. Hammers need a good balance and the nail puller in the claw needs to get tight close to the handle for best leverage, longer claw makes better prying and long handles make for better leverage and reach.

MY experience with hammers professionally has been as follows. 22oz Stanley, Stilletto 15oz wood handle, then the M1. M1 is hands down my favorite hammer.

Additionally, I switched to the Diamondback Tool Belt with the hammer holster. I highly recommend that system for the trades. Make the hammer so convenient. As you pointed out, no fishing behind you looking for the loop or struggling to get it from the loop.

The swelling on the handle is called a fawns foot on an axe, and like Richard said means you don't have to grip so hard coz you're not worried about flinging across the room. So less vibration travels to your arm or dodgy elbow in my case

I sanded down my wood framing hammer to create a more pronounced fawns foot. Specific to my hand anyway so I can feel where the end is and get more of a swing.

I use the German carpenter's hammer, the one with the long tip. That's why it's there so that you can lever it better, e.g .: Loosen the roof battens. It has a square head, so you get better in corners. It also has a nail holder with magnets and the notch at the front for pulling or prying nails, again using the long tip.

I have an m4 its great. I would say it feels a touch lighter than a 20 ounce estwing but the m4 has a 12 ounce head. M1 just seems too long for everyday building unless your doing alot of framing work. M1 is a framer hammer and M4 is a finnishing hammer. Took me a long time to figure out witch one to get but ended up deciding on the m4. Love it after almost a year

I have found that sanding off the factory finish and coating the handle with Penofin oil finish or a mixture of beeswax and linseed oil greatly improves the grip of wooden handles for all tools, especially hammer handles. In my opinion, they should not require great effort to hold, but be smooth enough to easily adjust ones grip. The beeswax and linseed oil is best applied hot. It absorbs into the wood and steel of tools, providing rust protection and a kind of lubrication for the metal, and provides great long lasting protection for the wood. It was taught to me by an old saw sharpener. Its also great on shovels. He said it was best if you could dip the entire tool in the hot mixture. He kept a tall thin steel barrel over a burner in the shop that was big enough to dip hand saws, and wide enough to take a shovel (half a shovel at a time). He also had a pot for band saw and circular saw blades. I never made more than a half gallon at a time, so I just tried to do it on a hot day and painted the hot mixture on with a paint brush. I don't remember the exact proportions, but I seem to remember 2 to 3 parts linseed oil to 1 part beeswax. The consistency is the most important part. It should be thin enough to absorb into the wood without just congealing on the surface when hot. You can use more beeswax if you are able to dip the entire tool in the hot mixture. Wipe off excess, and let dry for a day or two.

Great video. I use a 14oz stiletto with long wooden handle and love it. It's beat up too. I don't baby it. The wooden handled options are half the price of the solid titanium ones as well. And $150 isnt that much of an investment for a quality tool you use everyday, especially when considering the longevity of your joints.

I use a 14oz stiletto ti. At my local town fair they have a nail pounding competition and stilettos do well.

I have tried to drive really big nails with it when working on a barn. At a certain point the lighter hammer tends to bounce off the nail more. For normal framing nails it does great.

I'm old school and still using my estwing for last 23 years 16oz and got my 20oz about 15years ago..

Got it when I was 20 and its lasted longer then any relationship in my life. There has been a few other hammers but when she's reliable you always go back to her even if she's a little hard on your body...

I use the stiletto mini 14. Have had it for a couple of years now and would never go back to steel. Bought it after hand nailing weather boards on a house. Got half way through the job and started getting the tennis elbow. Second half of the house went with no aches or pains (except for the cost of the stiletto ) worth every cent and will change your life

The M1 is a very different hammer to swing and takes time to adjust to the mass at the end of the hammer. Keep in mind it's a 15 oz framing hammer that would be used where you would usually be using a 22oz to 25oz framing hammer. The theory is that they can do more with less weight since the mass is moved to the end of hammer. This makes the energy used to swing the hammer more efficient. I love that Mark Martinez is still working hard to innovate even after his creation of Stiletto hammer. It's an awesome hammer but I've always come back to my vintage Bob Hart hammers personally. Have to take car of them now though as they are getting harder and harder to find. Something about the classic axe handle and polished head just do something for me.

Had the Dalluge for 15+ years. It’s absolutely perfect. Replaced the handle once. Never had an issue with the short claws. It pulls the toughest nails pretty easy and in demo, the side puller is worth every penny. Used the estwiing prior and to this day i. Still paying the price from the nerve damage. Long term use of metal shaft hammers are very damaging to your nerves. Wood or nothing.

i knew when i saw the first video reviewing the m1 that you should’ve got the m4. the owner of martinez tools, mark even said himself if he were to buy one he would get an m4. much lighter and only 2” shorter which is perfect but the m4 is plenty of hammer to do framing but light enough to swing all day and do finish work

the M1 has a tendency of snapping off a claw during serious demo, i've worked with 2 guys that have done this. The replaceable grip also slacks off and has a rattle to it. The Stiletto grip gets a bit of a wiggle over time near the base but that is the only issue i've noticed in the 4 years I have owned it. Framer from Western Canada

My favorite hammer so far (I've never had or even used a tibone or an m1) is my estwing. It's an all aluminum with a steel head that I got at Lowe's for about $120.

After about ten years of use, I'm on the second wooden handle of my Stiletto 14oz Ti hammer and I expect it to last for another three handles easily. The replacement handles are about $15US. At some point I might send it in or have a local machinist re-waffle the head for me (I don't have the tools to do it properly).

The classic Stiletto 14oz wooden handle is an heirloom tool. A new handle can always be made out of stock material by a carpenter if Stiletto handles ever become unavailable. There are no proprietary fixings that could wear out or become unavailable (requiring a machinist to service a hammer) like some of the new fancy designs.

I do use a pry-bar and a steel-plastic handle hammer for demolition work. I take care of my Stiletto because it has taken care of me.

I used to build log homes. If you do log or timber building then I recommend something like a 24oz Death Stick. I could move a big log with a blow from that hammer that a 14oz Ti hammer could never do. The Death Stick was a bad-ass hammer when I was younger.

My first hammer was a $2 one I picked up out of necessity. It ran well for ten years until the fibreglass handle snapped. Now I run a not-as-cheap-but-still-budget wood handle hammer which goes alright and feels better than the fibreglass thing from before.

The Deluge hammer you have is exactly the same as my Douglas hammer which I’ve had about 15 years, and it’s a lovely hammer don’t do any real heavy work with it. I also have an estwing 20 oz leather grip which I recently regriped had it since 1976 was years ahead of its time and in my opinion the best there is. Replacement heads and handles ! Just buy a proper hammer and save a fortune on all these that have the looks but don’t perform 😊

Hi Scott, I loved my old Estwing square head 21oz weight foward hammer but it killed my elbows. But now I'm using the new Estwing pro? ( aircraft aluminium) it's not bad but I'd prefer if it had a shorter handle. I saw the new M4 on Amazon it looks good but spending heaps more on another hammer - I'm not ready to do that. Forgot to mention the angled head on the m1 , that was the biggest thing for me to get used to on my m1 , but I bought it to post frame and hand drive 60d nails all day and it worked very well for that , now I switched back to custom homes and regular stick framing so we're gonna see how it preforms on this crew , everyone else has ti-bone , and we all wear occidental fat lips

The Livelyness of the hammer, is the absolute most important metric. 30 seconds into the video, seeing both hammers, I bet the wooden one has very good livelyness. It looks well balanced for that.

My framing hammer has been a 15oz lowes exclusive kobalt for about 6 years. I have replaced it twice cuz I can go to Lowe's and swap a broken one. Side prying bent it, and the grip slid off. Both of those issues have been fixed (thicker neck, bolted handle) in the design and I've had the same one for 4 years. That's an insane lifespan for a framing hammer. Light, invincible, cheap, nice warranty (though idk if it's still made)

I do high rise concrete forming and a lot of guys that come from framing have stilettos and the head always come loose because we hit a lot metal objects. We don’t just nail nails into wood. I found the martinez m1 is way better. The replaceable heads are great and me and few others who have it will never switch.
M1 also has different size heads and 2 different handle types. Great product.

I have the Dalluge too - I love it except for the times it's flown out of my hand cos I've never got round to taping the handle and the handle screws loosening on a regular basis. It has a 'side' nail puller too! and a FAR easier to use one than the Stiletto style..
They totally aren't all the same price in Canada - the wooden handled versions are half the price of the Ti handles.

Use a card scraper and get that horrible varnish off the handle and treat with boiled linseed oil twice a year it's by far the best grip and will cut down on blisters if you dont use gloves. Tape gets sticky and messy and has to be replaced pretty often. I have to retape my hockey sticks every season and I play less than 30 games

Found it interesting how long the shafts of both of these hammer are, because I'm from Germany and I think the most common hammer here is the picard 298, witch is also has a spike on the head. For most of the demolition prosess we use ether the Hammer one a crowbar, if you need more force.

Started with a 20oz curved claw estwing then moved up to 24oz for a while. Then went to the big beasty 28oz straight claw which is brilliant for smashing together peri panels and other formwork clamps but terrible for the wrist. Now I’ve moved onto a California framer

If someone were just getting into general carpentry work and construction (bar maybe just framing or concrete) I'd tell them to get an Estwing 20oz all day. Great balance and great for all around work. Or if they are a newbie framer, the Estwing 19oz Ultra framer. Great hammers for the money.

I also thought mine felt really heavy. I switched the head to a M4 smooth face (still on my M1 handle). Feels a lot nicer for everyday general use and the green rubber cab is amazing for finish work. The head of the m12 head also has a flat top.

I use a 23oz Vaughn with a waffle head and a wooden handle that I put a Stiletto wrap on. Works fantastic for me. With the $25 wrap, it was $50 US

The m1 seems to be a demo hammer, hence the heavy head. Can be used for multiple things but really just for that dead weight hit. The magnetic nail setting groove is just a bonus if that is all you have.

Having bad wrists a stiletto hammer has been a god send, I have both a 10oz and 14oz titanium with hickory handles and after trying so many hammers they are my favourites even beating a ti bone 2.
Quick question for you Scott, now you've had the milwaukee nailer a while which do you prefer that or the hikoki?

I've got all types of hammers, think all carpenters started off with a 20oz estwing though. I've got a 10oz stiletto, 14oz stilleto, a Tibone mini but my go to is the M4,, had it 2 years now and love it... I subsequently have other Martinez goodies, a speed square, mini trim square and a couple of prybars.

Stiletto 14oz Titanium is the sweet spot for me. Light, hits hard, low vibration. Also, much less expensive than the Martinez. Here in the U.S., the Stiletto is $90-100. The Martinez is like $250. If there was any performance negatives to the Stiletto, I would be willing to pay more, but it seems that for me, it is pretty perfect.

4:00 To combat the "weight working against you"... for tapping in pieces of wood, you could just let the hammer grip slide up your hand for a "short grip" for more controlled taps, then let the hammer drop back to "long grip" for larger swings.... Change your Paradigm of thinking that you are only allowed to grab the grip of the handle. Think like a blacksmith and how they are always adjusting their grip on their hammer while forging metal. You can do the same for carpentry ;)

That's what I was thinking. Speaking as someone who's never actually worked a day in his life I wonder how feasible/usable it would be to fashion a wooden grip to fit into one of the openings in the titanium part for comfortably choking up on the hammer.

Appreciate you reviewing the hammer before I take a plunge and spend that type of money. The stilettos nice because you can switch heads. Some people need both. Hope to see more reviews on hammers.

I have an old Hart hammer that looks real similar to the Vaughn Delluge but there are 3 bolts in the handle. I bought it in the early 90's I believe. I just dusted it off a couple of months ago to frame a house for my folks. It still feels good. :)

I would certainly try one of these before buying another stiletto, but I am a Vaughan guy through and through. You should try one of their 23oz Vaughan California swingers/California Framers. They have a steel head on a long hickory handle (be sure to get the one with the curved "hatchet handle"). They are my go to hammer for framing and cribbing.

I use an Estwing 16 oz straight claw framing hammer i bought in 1981 to start a roofing job with my brother. Wore the waffling off the face of the head , still use it everyday .

Estwing Ultra Series 15oz. I've had it for years, it's a baby hammer but it can beat the snot out of anything and being light and small, easy to carry all day. A hammer is a tool, I am rough on it and it does it's job. Straight claw is very specific, the slightly rounded has many more uses and is an all-rounder. Also being small I have my belt loop on my right and it doesn't hit my leg or get in the way like a long framing hammer. I've been meaning to try other hammers, but never bothered, just happy with the little Estwing.

Great honest review. I used a Bob Hart Cali Framer 22-oz steel/wood hammer for years. If I were still in the business, I'd deffo try a titanium hammer.

I love my Martinez. Wish there was a version without the trick magnet nail holder. I have used this hammer for over a year and have never used the nail holder, but the top of the striking face with the magnet nail groove has beaten up two cats paws. Thinking of welding the groove closed and suffering loss of temper. PS all Ti hammers have less inertia than steel, allowing the hammering of such things as fencing staples without flattening them. Makes the fencing wire last much longer when the staple has not pinched the galvanizing off...

Currently have a 19oz Milwaukee Hatchet handle hammer. I used to be a framer back in the late 90’s and Vaughan was the wooden hammer to have then. Not sure about now.

Estwing 20s. When I first started roofing the industry was still nailing sheets on the roof. My left thumb loved kissing the hammer head. Especially on the laps. Took alot of practice and blood to learn how to get the nail in nicely without smashing my thumb and denting the sheet. It was for me better to have a heavy hammer

Greylynnjr. My father was a builder and I would help the Carpenters pitch roofs. I bought 3 estwing hammers and they all had legs. I stopped buying the estwing hammer until many years later. That hammer also grew legs and walked away. I then bought a Johnson hammer which wasn't much chop. All my tools went on holidays so I bought tools again. Haven't bought a hammer since all my tools went on holidays a few years ago. I think my tools are in self isolation somewhere probably another state.
It's interesting the different hammers and their function. I know about stress I feel the titanium may have too much flex. Not sure the newer models. I always bought the 24 ounce. Although I screw everything so although there have been instances I needed a hammer, I used a Thor dead blow hammer and small Gympies. Milwaukee make not a bad hammer. I'm thinking I will get a steel hammer.

I've had a 22oz steel hart for the last 2 years, one of my coworkers handed it to me yesterday and said this its heavier than it looks. Had no idea stilletos were under 20 oz until that moment lmao. Also squeezed the head right off my dick taking a piss the other day.

@- Curran Been in construction for about 18 years. I just use a Stanley hammer that cost about 15 quid, and honestly, my elbow is fine!
I actually have problems with my non-hammer hand and wrist. I think it's because I use that hand to grip and hold stuff in place while I hammer/screw it.

As a Chippy in Alexandra, Otago. Iv'e gone with the stiletto 14oz standard smooth faced 18". There is no fancy features with it, no side pull or interchangable what not. Of the 5 or so hammers I own it's my favorite to use when the head stays put, The biggest downside is the head fixture, the traditional way, it works loose, and of course being down here in the desert the dry air dries out the timber of the handle and makes it worse. Have had a play with the Martinez but the guy was running the m4 handle on the m1 head, was quite impressed, to be honest though, you can't go past the wood.

I use a M1 martinez with a M4 12 oz smooth face head :), it does make a difference and its still enough to drive those 3 1/2" nails in !

i lost my 28oz, but I'm low-key thankfully i lost it. It could drive nails like crazy, but if you need to flick something or just nudge/tap something it would absolutely kill your wrist. I stayed w/ Estwing though and i bought one if their framing hammers, haven't used it yet but my trade doesn't require hammers to often but it's a tool you gotta have.

i just retired after using my Sweet ESTWING hammer for almost 40 years . If I had to do it over again - I would still buy an ESTWING hammer . Sad to say , BUT most of the carpenters that had hand and arm problems always blamed it on the hammer . Its not the hammers fault , it was their fault for never learning the correct way to swing a hammer !

The m1 really shines in commercial concrete, same with those Tibones. The nail set can hold 3/14 inch dups and you dont need to replace your wood handle every 5 months. You can also pull nails out of concrete with the side puller.

I swung a Douglas for a long time and I still have it for driving stakes and spikes because it has a steel head. For the last 15 or so years I use a titanium Stiletto. Stiletto is my tool. As far as your grip goes with a wood handle, I carry a puck of surfboard wax in my toolbox. Thank me later

As a mechanic who always has some sort of grease/lube one his hands, and has trouble gripping tools properly. A tip from my grandad, remove that polyurethane coating on the handle. It’s basically plastic, bare wood will never slip and if your worried about it warping or becoming damaged because of water, just give it a coat of linseed oil.

I recently switched to using wooden handles as we do foundations as well as framing and the oil from the forms makes rubber and other synthetic handles very slippery/ slimey. The wooden handles absord the oil and never get slippery, the best thing to do with a wooden handle is sand the varnish off and soak it in anti freeze so it won't shrink and crack

Best hammer I ever owner was a Vaughn 19oz straight wood handle. Martinez looks nice but I don’t think a wood handle will ever be replaced.

For wood handles: sand off the shiny, slippery varnish or lacquer or poly or whatever the heck the finish is. Sand to the bare wood, tune up the shape maybe, finish with 2 applications of boiled linseed oil for a very usable grip.
When I switched from the Estwing framer to a wood-handled Hart I knew the Estwing was pretty much relegated to the worst demo jobs... Wood handles ever since.

A 100% increase in mass will produce a 50% increase to the force applied to a nail or what ever a hammer is striking. A 100% increase in speed will produce a 400% increase in force applied. Swinging a lighter hammer faster is ideal for carpentry. I’m a bigger guy that carried a heavy hammer for about 15-20 years before I figured that out🦾
