Long Time Comin'
Nicki Minaj Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[ verse 1 ]
Patty cake, patty cake
I mean really what the fuck that bitch patty bake?
Anyway I just heard T.I.P say
That black people turnin lemons into lemonade
Tell em to demnstrate
I guess he did already
Guess I'm a little bitter
Cuz I show bitches how to do it like they babysitter
So where my cash at?
& where my stash at
I mean where the Dall Jones
Where theNas Dack
I do it for the little macks wit they caps back
My little niggas pumpin crack out they nap sack

Know what I mean?
Get the sticky green, pass that
I smoke bitches, kill niggas can't patch that
Don't need cha spt to get a good game
Cuz a shot is a shot if it gotta good aim

[ chorus ]
Its been a long time comin but I came,
Now everybody in the rap game know my name
But honey aint a damn thing funny when ya fame

Out ways ya change ( out ways ya change )
X2

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Nicki Minaj's verse in the song Long Time Comin' reveals her anger towards someone called Patty Bake. Nicki doesn't reveal who Patty Bake is, but it seems like she shares some history with her. Shortly after, Nicki refers to T.I.P, AKA T.I, who recently made a comment about black people turning lemons into lemonade. This is a metaphor that means turning something bad into something good, and Nicki agrees with the statement. She mentions that T.I.P has already demonstrated this capability, but she feels bitter about it.

The reason for Nicki's bitterness is not explicitly stated, but she implies that she helped some bitches (women) reach success, just like a babysitter would take care of children, but she feels like they didn't give her enough credit. She then switches the focus to the cash and stash that she's after, referring to Nasdaq and Dow Jones, which are the two most popular stock indexes in the United States. Nicki then shows solidarity with the little macks, who are kids with caps backward, and the little niggas who sell crack with nap sacks. These lines show her connection to the streets, where she's from, and her desire to bring her people up. She ends the verse by boasting of her skills with both the gamers and the shooters.

The chorus of the song reiterates what Nicki has been saying throughout her verse, that it's been a long time coming, but she finally made it. She wants everyone in the rap game to know her name, but she warns that it's not all fun and games when fame outweighs your change. This line means that when you become famous, you must be careful not to let the money and the attention change you, so you must stay true to yourself.

My ex boyfriend killed himself in 2019. I was driving home from work a few days ago and this song came on the radio. It was the first time I've ever heard it. I burst into tears. "Wish I would have known in that instant, so many hints and I missed it" resonates with me heavily.
There is so much left unsaid. So many apologies I want to make. So many wishes I could have saved him.
"I still dream about you"
He's come to me in my dreams, and I know that's him saying hello.
Im not even a huge Nicki fan, but this song hit every emotion about that. And that's what music and poetry is supposed to do.
Give you the words when you don't know how.

I’m so sorry for your loss angel. Praying that you’re able to heal. Losing someone alone isn’t easy and especially in that way. The fact that he comes and visits you in your dreams says a lot about how much love he still has and had for you even through the very end. It also isn’t your fault and I bet he was blessed to be loved by you and you by him. You made it worth it for him but sometimes other factors take hold of us. He could’ve been dealing with other factors and so I don’t want you to blame yourself for something that you couldn’t control. He doesn’t want you to carry this burden or guilt so he visits you in your dreams. I wish he would’ve chose to share how he felt and reach out for help when he was suffering. It isn’t your responsibility to save but it is to love and right now I see that you still have so much love for him. Don’t let go of that and remember him for all the great that he was. Share his story and learn from this. Be kind to those around you and ask your friends and family if they are ok even if they look like they are. Keep his name alive by loving yourself and others. I hope you’re healing angel and in a much better place. Praying for you much love ❤️
