Memento Mori
Nina C. Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

In my heart I feel a change
What once was now looks so strange
You're out at sea and I'm ashore
These wounds don't seem to wait
If you're a fist I'm a window pane
Like the moon we wax and wane

She says we're not gonna make it
This night is fading just like a photograph
It's bittersweet but I'll take it
They say that some things
Are just not meant to last
This night's fading like a photograph
This night's fading like a photograph
This night's fading like a photograph
Some things just aren't meant to last

Oh I constantly explain
You're the mist I'm the pouring rain
And slowly we evaporate
In these tombs I seal away
Precious little that still remains
To never see the light of day

She says we're not gonna make it
This night is fading just like a photograph
It's bittersweet but I'll take it
They say that some things
Are just not meant to last
This night's fading like a photograph
This night's fading like a photograph
This night's fading like a photograph
Some things just aren't meant to last

She says memento mori
Tonight ignore the warnings
We could be dead by morning
And I'm fading like a photograph
And I'm fading like a photograph

She says we're not gonna make it
This night is fading just like a photograph
It's bittersweet but I'll take it
They say that some things
Are just not meant to last
This night's fading like a photograph
This night's fading like a photograph

This night's fading like a photograph
Some things just aren't meant to last

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nina C. Young's song "Memento Mori" encapsulate the theme of change, impermanence, and the fleeting nature of relationships and life itself. The singer reflects on a profound transformation happening within, a change that makes the familiar seem strange and foreign. This internal shift is metaphorically represented by the imagery of being separated from a loved one, with one person "out at sea" and the other "ashore." The wounds of separation are poignant and constant, emphasizing the pain of distance and the inevitability of change.

The comparison between the singer being a "window pane" and their partner being a "fist" suggests a delicate vulnerability contrasted with a forceful nature. This imagery implies a sense of fragility and the potential for harm or impact. The waxing and waning of the moon symbolizes the cyclical nature of relationships, how they change and evolve over time, mirroring the ebb and flow of emotions and connections.

The repetition of the phrase "This night is fading like a photograph" underscores the transitory nature of moments and memories. The singer acknowledges the inevitability of impermanence, recognizing that some things are simply not meant to last. The acceptance of this reality is bittersweet, showcasing a resignation to the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of life's experiences.

The chorus, where the singer's partner urges them to remember "memento mori" and to heed the warnings of mortality, further intensifies the theme of impermanence and the urgency of living in the present moment. The fear of the looming possibility of death lends a sense of urgency to the relationship, emphasizing the need to embrace the fleeting time they have together. The repeated refrain of fading like a photograph evokes a sense of nostalgia and memory, highlighting the poignant recognition of moments slipping away and the acceptance that some things, including the relationship itself, may not endure.

A very intense and poised movement for traditional string quartet and a perfect antidote to those who say that there's no room for this form any more.  Exceptional handling of pace, colour and texture.

+ComposerInUK Why would such an absurd and baseless claim require an 'antidote' at all? Isn't it much easier to just ignore those eternally-bored PoMo types?

cleomagoolando You're probably right, cleo...  I just get riled sometimes :)

That is also very much due to the JACK Quartet's amazing attention to all of pieces they perform. They could take a mediocre piece and turn it into something special.

Not to say this piece isn't still incredibly well constructed

This is a very moving piece.

Congratulations to the composer!

Some of the textures remind me of Ligeti at times, but a very original sound palette always seeks to bubble through. Gorgeous piece of music!

SJCarlsonMusic

Ugh, I absolutely love this. Gonna need to find more from Ms. Young.
