Nine Sons Of Dan formed during mid 2008, as a result of drummer Morgan Blake’s need for an engineering project for his university studies. This “project” began first with Morgan and his roommate, fellow Griffith University student Alex Pundyk, writing songs with Alex’s ex-band mate, Jay Bainbridge, from Coffs Harbour. The group began writing in the Gold Coast, where Alex and Morgan currently study.
After a short writing period, the group met Daniel Cox, at a Coffs Harbour band competition, who was judging the event at the time. After appearing on a short solo section for the group’s tracking, he was soon enlisted as the groups lead guitarist, which would have a phenomenal effect on the group’s direction and sound.
Fast forward to just over a year, NSOD have completed their first demo cd, and gone on to win one of largest band competition’s in Australia during early July, The LOUD 09 Outdoor Band Competition, receiving $20,000 in prizes, including recording opportunities with some of Australia’s most prominent studio facilities. The quartet took out first place ahead of more than 120 other bands from QLD and Northern NSW, and generated label interest for the group. At the moment the group is fully self managed and promoted.
Only weeks before, the band also took out first place in the Sands Battle Of The Bands, held at the Sands Hotel, Coolangatta, ahead of more than 50 competing acts, to receive $1500 dollars in prize money and additional recording prizes.
The group’s live success can be seen in their involvement and appreciation of a wide variety of aspects of pop and rock music into their own style in a manner which their peers have failed to do. The Nine Sons Of Dan live show is fast faced, and delivered punctually, but within the organized rock sensibilities lies many things overlooked by bands of similar genres, from simple dance formatted choruses, to progressive rock breakdowns, thundering drum patterns, to 80’s influenced guitar soloing.
Nine Sons Of Dan, although considered a rock band by all analytical means, is a group which simply strives to perform their best and entertain any person, no matter what musical taste.
As well as these competitive achievements, the band has been selected to support some of Australia’s biggest acts, and the diversity of these artists illustrates the wide number genres and fanbases that Nine Sons Of Dan’s charismatic live show and fresh brand of alternate rock appeals to.
These names include British India, Grafton Primary, Stone Parade, and the band was also selected from a state wide number of bands on through myspace to support Kisschasy Summer Siezures Tour in January; Nine Sons Of Dan were selected by Kisschasy to support them on their Coffs Harbour and Yamba dates.
The group tracked and produced their first demo effort, containing six tracks, in the Gold Coast studios at Griffith University, available through Morgan’s study, and had the tracks mixed and mastered by Coffs Harbour local Pete Dyball, at Valley Sound Studios.
Having recently hosted their own EP launch in their hometown of Coffs Harbour, the band now plan to complete the material for their full length debut, as well as continue to promote their demo through online sales and merchandise. The group hope to have the cd completed within one to two months, and hope to gain national exposure through thorough touring.
