In Bloom
Nirvana - [Nevermind 1991] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sell the kids for food
Weather changes moods
Spring is here again
Reproductive glands

He's the one
Who like all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means
And I say
He's the one
Who like all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means
And I say yeah

We can have some more
Nature is a whore
Bruises on the fruit
Tender age in bloom

He's the one
Who like all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means
And I say
He's the one
Who like all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means
And I say yeah

He's the one
Who like all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means
And I say
He's the one
Who like all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means

Don't know what it means
And I say yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nirvana's song "In Bloom," can be interpreted in different ways. One interpretation is that it critiques the way people consume and interpret music. The first verse suggests the commodification of children and how people can easily sell them for food. The second line may refer to how weather affects people's psyche. The third line indicates the arrival of spring while the last line may allude to the sexual awakening of teenagers.

The chorus repeats the same lines twice and may suggest the irony of how people can enjoy and sing along pretty-sounding songs without understanding the lyrics' true meaning. The phrase "shoot his gun" may allude to the violence and the angry energy that people misinterpret in some of Nirvana's and other grunge's songs. The lyrics criticize how the audience tends to misunderstand the message behind their lyrics, which is sometimes political, social commentary, or related to depression and mental health.

Overall, the song 'In Bloom' speaks about the band's success despite their intended message getting overlooked or misunderstood. The verses address the idea of commercialism, and the chorus tackles the concept of people not truly hearing what the band was saying while singing along to their music.

This is probably the best Beatles song

@idontlikeseeinglongusernam4589

If they WERE around in the 1960s then they would of been as big as the Beatles.
if not then bigger

@garethjones3227

Don't agree on that one dude, i think they would have been to avant garde for that early on in music history. The worlds ears just wasn't ready back then. Just take the pixies as an example, they were way ahead of thier time and would have been better recieved between 95-05' imho.
It's the whole back to the future johnny b goode scenario.

@clowntrooper61

No they wouldn't. They weren't british.
