Everybody's Down
No Age Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Not afraid of laughter
Sense of feeling too

All the things they feed with dirt
Make me feel like I can't do it

Everybody's down
Everybody's down

It's time to call someone to fall
But no one is around

I'm exhausted too Roy
Fighting for two bits

Makes me feel like I can't
Makes me feel like I can't do it

Everybody's down
Everybody's down

In every soul
In every town

Everybody's got me goin' ooooo
A-ooooo, a-ooooo, a-ooooo

We only hope when we're dead
Get no joy always hate within

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of No Age's song Everybody's Down hints towards the idea of exhaustion, detachment and despondency. The first verse "Not afraid of laughter, sense of feeling too" seems to contradict itself at first. Laughter, which usually conveys a sense of happiness, is paired with a profound and deep sense of feeling, which is quite ambiguous. This is followed by "All the things they feed with dirt make me feel like I can't do it," which represents a resigned feeling of despair. This line refers to how things and problems in life pile up on each other, creating a sense of burden, burying any motivation or inspiration that may have been there before. The chorus "Everybody's down, everybody's down, it's time to call someone to fall but no one is around" echoes the feeling of loneliness and how it can add up to an already packed feeling of dread. The repetition of the phrase 'everybody's down' conveys a sense of bleakness, referring to how everyone, including the singer, is feeling down, leaving no one to talk to or share the burden.

The second verse "I'm exhausted too Roy, fighting for two bits makes me feel like I can't do it" continues the themes of the first, where exhaustion and the sense of fighting for something that is not enough drains the singer of any hope or energy. Roy here seems like either a person or a persona the singer addresses, expressing a shared understanding of exhaustion. The chorus repeats, indicating no change in the feeling of despair, but the final lines, "In every soul, in every town, everybody's got me going oooooo, a-ooooo, a-ooooo, a-ooooo" conveys how despair can be a shared feeling between people, regardless of location, community, or background. The final line, "We only hope when we're dead, get no joy always hate within" paints a bleak picture that nothing in life brings joy, and the only hope a person can have is when they are dead.
