No Strings Attached is also the name of an award-winning quartet based in Roanoke/Blacksburg, Virginia. The group features hundreds of strings playing music described as "eclectic, jazz on acoustic instruments and world beat." The Washington Post accurately described them as "one of the more adventurous string ensembles today." While their recordings feature traditional acoustic music, they also incorporate material by Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, the Chieftains, and Bill Spence, as well as their own originals. The eclectic brand of music they play and their exciting stage personae--think Cirque du Soleil and you're close--has allowed them to open for such artists as Mary Wilson and the Supremes, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Doc Watson, Turtle Island String Quartet, John Hartford, and John McCutcheon. They have played in many American and European venues and wrote and performed the theme song for the PRI radio show World Cafe. On stage, they typically dance the tango with their instruments, parody old rock and roll bands, clog while playing old-time tunes, and sometimes use the slinky (yes, the old toy) as a percussion instrument. The band members don't cite strong folk music influences.
Bassist Bob Thomas comes from the jazz, rock, and bluegrass worlds and is one of the vocalists in the group. He takes his role as "bassist" to heart, playing acoustic bass, bass
clarinet, and bass saxophone, with the goal of "owning a bass instrument from every instrument family." Wes Chappell is the other vocalist and the multi-instrumentalist of the group. His background is rock and roll, but he plays in a variety of styles. Harmonica player Pete Hastings has become well known for his virtuosity on the chromatic and diatonic harmonicas, having studied under harmonica master Howard Levy for a number of years. Hastings also doubles as the group's guitarist. Randy Marchany, who plays the hammer dulcimer and keyboards, was trained as a classical pianist.

You got all the cool cars, you got diamonds and pearls
You make all the right calls, you land all the big deals
You had all the fun drinks, you took all the right pills
You never know what you're running from
You never know who you're stealing from
You never know when a smile is fake
You never know when your heads at stake
You never know who you're stealing from
You never know when a smile is fake
You never know when your heads at stake
Stop running 'cuz you're on your own
Doesn't matter if you're scared to the bone
You'll never make it 'cuz you're on your own
Don't turn back 'cuz it's a long way home
So you say that you, you got birdies everywhere
You're the one dealing the cards, and you tell them what is fair
You tell people what to do, you're the one who calls the shots
Running around like just a fool, but you never drew first blood
You never know what you're running from
You never know who you're stealing from
You never know when a smile is fake
You never know when your heads at stake
Stop running 'cuz you're on your own
Doesn't matter if you're scared to the bone
You'll never make it 'cuz you're on your own
Don't turn back 'cuz it's a long way home
The lyrics to "Long Way Home" by No Strings Attached delve into the theme of superficiality and the consequences of living a life based on appearances and false bravado. The first verse exposes the facade of the singer, who boasts about their material possessions, social status, and reckless lifestyle. However, beneath this surface level success, they remain ignorant and clueless about the true nature of their actions.
The repeated lines "You never know what you're running from" and "You never know who you're stealing from" suggest a lack of self-awareness and a disconnection from reality. The singer is so caught up in their own image that they fail to recognize the negative impact they may be causing or the potential dangers they are inviting upon themselves. They are constantly chasing something, whether it be fleeting pleasure, the approval of others, or the accumulation of wealth, but they are oblivious to the true meaning or consequences of their actions.
The chorus emphasizes the idea that the singer is ultimately alone in their journey. Despite their superficial confidence, they are scared and directionless. They are warned not to turn back because the path they have chosen is long and arduous. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for their pursuit of an empty and superficial life, which ultimately leads to isolation and disconnection from genuine connections and emotions.
In the second verse, the lyrics further expose the emptiness and shallowness of the singer's life. They claim to have a network of connections (represented by the metaphor "birdies everywhere") and believe they hold power in their ability to manipulate and control situations. However, it becomes apparent that their power is merely an illusion, as they have never had to face the consequences of their actions, never drawing "first blood."
Overall, "Long Way Home" serves as a critique of a superficial and materialistic lifestyle, urging listeners to reconsider their values and priorities. It suggests that true fulfillment and happiness cannot be found in the pursuit of appearances and the disregard for others, but rather in genuine connections, self-reflection, and the courage to face one's true self.
