No Name
Noname & Yaw & Adam Ness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No name for people to call small or colonize optimism
No name for inmate registries that they put me in prison
I sewed the answers in linen
Dance em' under the thread
Pretend I'm riding in your cities when niggas scared of the feds
There's a ghost on my bike
City lay with a bullet
He wrote the scriptures for living in all the ways that he couldn't
Gave up the profit for pennies
No taste in mystery pudding
When labels ask me to sign
So my name don't exist
So many names don't exist
Welcome to Inglewood
And the trauma came with the rent
Only worldly possession I have is life
Only room that I died in was 25
What's an eye for an eye when niggas won't love you back?
And medicine's overtaxed
No name look like you
No name for private corporations to send emails to
'Cause when we walk into heaven
Nobody's name gon' exist
Just boundless movement for joy, nakedness radiance

Through all the joy and all the pain
Don't forget from where you came, the avenue remembers you
Your song, your truth, your light is proof
That love is still with you

Your life, your life, your life
Don't let it pass you by
Don't let it pass you by
Your life, you life, is your life, baby

Don't let it pass you by
Don't let it pass you by

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "no name" by Noname, Yaw, and Adam Ness touch upon several themes including identity, oppression, and the significance of living life to the fullest. The song begins by addressing the absence of a name for marginalized people who are dehumanized and exploited by systems of power. The artists highlight the injustices faced by inmates, referring to the dehumanizing experience of being reduced to a number in a prison registry.

Noname then employs imagery of sewing answers into linen and dancing under threads, symbolizing her defiance and resilience in the face of fear and surveillance. She challenges the notion of conformity, expressing her refusal to be controlled by external forces. The lyrics allude to a ghost on a bike, suggesting the presence of unaddressed traumas and the weight they carry. The ghost, perhaps a metaphor for the past, is juxtaposed with the bullet in the city, representing the violence and danger present in everyday life.

The artist acknowledges the struggle faced by those who are denied opportunities and marginalized, noting the difficult circumstances that push individuals to forsake profit for mere pennies. Noname also subverts the notion of fame and recognition, questioning the existence of names altogether. In this context, "no name" is not only a reference to personal identity but also a critique of the power dynamics within the music industry.

The lyrics then shift to Inglewood, a location associated with the trauma that comes with the cost of living. Noname emphasizes the limited control individuals have over their lives, highlighting the societal and economic constraints they face. The concept of reciprocity is explored, as she questions the significance of seeking revenge when there is no guarantee of love and care in return. The lyrics further touch upon the burden of overtaxed medicine and the lack of access to healthcare.

The song concludes on a hopeful note, suggesting that in heaven, labels and names will no longer matter. Noname envisions a realm of boundless movement, joy, and radiance, emphasizing the importance of embracing and celebrating our individuality and humanity.

I’ve always really liked this idea of radical anonymity. It’s like that Emily Dickinson poem, “I’m nobody, who are you?” Everybody I know has at one point or another fantasized about quitting their job to go live in the woods and pick berries. Because life in a complex society, particularly one under industrialized capitalism, is an existence in debt. You always need to respond to a work email, or pay your rent, or deal with the fucking cops who make your existence illegal if you’re queer or brown or dare to in any way question their authority. You either participate in the system or you are jailed and/or die. Declaring you have no name is the truest way to be a “nobody” and the most radical refutation of the the state
